When witnessing to the lost, we need to know about God's word to help explain it to them.
2 Timothy 2:15

15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
In order to teach God's word, we need to learn it. Memorizing verses is a good thing. Someone asks a question, and a verse comes to mind that you have remembered, and you are able to help them. Even if you don't remember the verse you probably would have a good idea where it is, and you would be able to get out your Bible, and show them the word of God, and lead them to Jesus Christ, to salvation.
That brings me to my second point. It is a good idea to carry a small Bible around. This is something I need to do too.
We all need to be ready when witnessing to someone.
