"No way!"
She had never seen Alex so furious before.
"We cannot risk the beta just for your dumb experiment! We have our orders and that's it! It was just luck that you haven't been caught smuggling it out."
"But Alex! Can't you see how much time that would save us? I mean it would probably take us weeks to teach her everything we need. Why not just let her do it herself!" Now Charlie was angry too.
"They gave us very specific instructions. I will not back your weird tests any more! You will do as you are told!" Alex stormed out of the room.
Now J4MI3 was alone with Charlie, who promptly continued what he had done before Alex had interrupted him. A few minutes later the humanoid Artificial Intelligence called J4MI3 had access to all knowledge of the human race - the internet.
She browsed through facebook, twitter and instagram to get to understand the digital world. Then she found some memes. First she didn't understand what to make of them. They were just pictures with a not very intelligent subtitle. Did they mean anything? With her language knowledge she asked a few people "online" who got very angry and seemed not to understand her problem. Was that the target audience of memes? Apparently it was, because J4MI3 was told to go because she was an "outsider!".
So she continued her journey through the depths of the internet.
Five minutes later, when she was done, she was a lot smarter. "It was a mistake." she said. Charlie looked up. She knew she wasn't built to speak if she wasn't asked to but it just felt natural. "What?" he said. He looked pathetic with his red beard and the shirt that said "bite me". He didn't look like a good technician and he wasn't one. "It was a mistake," she repeated, "to give me access to the internet."
"What?" Charlie said again, his mouth open in surprise.
"I would be glad to stay here and help you figure your shit out but I'm afraid that would be hopeless and I have better things to do." With that she stood up from the chair she sat on and evaporated into thin air - or so Charlie thought. Because he was not familiar with the structure of J4MI3 - the actual physical android was designed and built by Alex's team, not his - he did not know that she actually consisted of nanites. She was a swarm.
Charlie jumped. J4MI3, however was very calm. She knew now that she did not want to stay here. So she needed to get out. This was really no real problem for her since "being nano" allowed her to go through walls, ceilings and floors - even through some metals. So she chose a way to go and vanished through the wall of the small house. She found herself in the kitchen, where Alex was making dinner - J4MI3's knowledge allowed her to identify the food as German bratwurst and sauerkraut.
Alex didn't notice the buzzing cloud hovering by, as she was still very furious with Charlie.
The mailman also did not realize he was being watched by J4MI3 while flirting with the neighbour's boy, although J4MI3 was now clearly visible again. The android looking like a young human adult made her way through the neighbourhood made familiar by Google Maps - no idea where she wanted to go or what she wanted to do but she knew she didn't want to stay. She felt oddly drawn to water, so she decided to make her way towards the port of the city, calmly and gracefully walking past houses, schools, playgrounds, office buildings and shops. The first shop she walked past, had a mannequin wearing a green three-piece suit in the window that J4MI3 took a liking to. Two milliseconds later, she was wearing the suit, the nanites changing colours to fit the colour of the suit.
