Chapter Three

I look over at Heidi who shrugs her shoulders. I'm sure she's feeling my panic. We all quickly wait by the door for the Beta. Mom and I stand behind Heidi as she opens the door

"Beta Swarm what can I do for you this evening?" My mother greets him kindly

"Ginger!" He pulls our mother into a quick embrace carefully releasing her "Just here to get Heidi" he smiles politely at her as he walks further into our house

If our mother swoons any harder I'm pretty sure her knees are going to buckle beneath her. Although it is odd for him to be here. Him and Heidi have trained all summer and not once did he make a visit to our home to retrieve her. Clicking my tongue against the roof of my mouth I look him over.. he's a charmer thats for sure. I look up catching the Beta staring at me. His green eyes vibrant they remind me of the forest at night turning a hazel green when they lock in on me— like a cat's: mischievous and quick to chase. I quickly look down dodging his gaze my heart fluttering at the sudden awareness from him. Goddess.. this is the second male now that has sent my heart soaring willing to make an escape from my chest has it been that long since I've been with a man? He runs a quick hand through his short brown hair. He's a light, sun-kissed brunette shades of subtle honey tones woven throughout. His skin pale peeking out from underneath his black short sleeves of his top where they stop midway on his biceps hinting of a farmers tan from the summer giving his complexion two tones. His energy is strong his aura is orange with yellow at the core the orange only represents power him being the beta it's a light orange for now.. If I saw the alpha I'm sure his would be a dark orange to red. I feel him walk closer to me as a low snarl comes from deep within Heidi.

"You sure are gorgeous" he compliments me his voice thick like honey

I blush my eyes widening with shock at his comment looking up at him I find he's smiling at me with perfect white teeth all aligned in a row. He attempts to move closer but Heidi's hand comes out hitting his shoulder stopping him in his tracks.

This time she lets out a warning growl "Close enough"

He growls back "Are you forgetting who you are talking to?"

"No but it doesn't stop me from protecting her from you" She moves in between us crossing her arms over her chest

She comes up to the Beta's chest but that doesn't stop her from standing her ground. One of the many reasons I admire her. I know her protective instincts are kicking in from our bond that she has no control over and for whatever the reason she deems Jax a threat.

"Heidi" our mother warns "he's not going to do anything to Harper"

"He's a man whore. He's trying to corrupt her. " she glares turning back to the Beta "we all know about your horrible reputation" she pokes a finger at his chest and there it is I didn't even have to pry her mind for answers— his reputation backing up his smooth charm her reasoning of why he's not good enough to touch me. It doesn't surprise me he's the Beta but also he's Roman's best friend they both have reputations.

I assess Jax over again hands on my hips looking him up and down frowning as we know majority of the unmated males in our pack love the female attention however in this moment something with Jax calls to me the longer I look him over and not in a sense of me wanting to bed him it's more of a nuisance pulling at me causing my hands to react with a pins and needles sensation.

I pull on Heidi's sleeve trying to drag her attention away from wanting to bite Jax's head off because if she was given the chance she most definitely would "Heidi calm down" I tsk at her

She swats me away turning her head to the side to growl at me "No! I am not letting up on this Harper" she snaps her eyes are now glowing yellow from their typical golden honey brown
