Chapter 1

“Yes my love; I’m certain you’ll make loads of new friends,” Rose’s mother insisted adamantly again, wrapping her arms around her little girl for one final goodbye hug. Rose didn’t argue, but she had her doubts about making new friends. Her mother isn’t a witch and her father wasn’t a wizard when he was alive, making Rose think that she was the freak in her family and perhaps the outcast of the wizarding world. What if everybody thinks I’m some sort of phony? She wondered anxiously, hugging her mother back tightly.

“Off you go then,” her mother smiled, pulling away from Rose and looking down at her with twinkling eyes. “Write me as soon as you get the chance.” Rose stole a glance over at her new owl, Nester, and a giant grin stretched across her small face. She still found the whole concept of the owl post extraordinary, and couldn’t wait to send her mum letters with Nester.

“Bye,” she said in a small voice, blowing a kiss at her mother and hopping onto the train. It was due to leave any minute now. Rose looked around anxiously for a friendly face, but to her dismay, she found none. Everyone seemed to know one another already, and she was left standing awkwardly by the door, wondering if she’d be able to find anyone to share a compartment with. Being the shy little girl that she was, she was finding it very difficult to pluck up the courage to approach anyone. Rose was positive that she’d end up standing by the door until they arrived at Hogwarts, all until the kind voice of a boy spoke sweetly to her, causing her to spin around in surprise.

“Need somewhere to sit?” he asked, a gregarious smile stretched across his young, but devilishly handsome face. He looked young, and Rose assumed that he was probably the same age and year as her. His eyes crinkled up when he smiled, and they were filled with happiness and excitement. He pushed his long, dark curly hair away from his face as he awaited Rose’s answer.

“Erm, sure,” she smiled back timidly, picking up Nester’s cage and gripping onto the handle of her suitcase. “Thanks.” He grinned at her acceptance and led her down the train a ways, saying hello to the occasional fellow first year. “I’m Sirius Black, by the way,” he introduced himself as they stopped in front of the compartment that Rose supposed was his. He looked at her expectantly, and it took her an awkward moment to realize that he wanted to know her name as well.

“Oh right,” she stammered quickly. “I’m Rose, Rose Garland.” She hoped he didn’t think she was a lunatic.

“Pleasure to meet you,” he grinned, pushing the door open and stepping aside. “After you.” Rose stepped inside to find three other boys; one with glasses and the unruliest hair she’d ever laid eyes on, one pudgy one with a bit of a rat-like face, and one who looked very kind. By looking into his eyes, she could tell that he had more wisdom than most other children her age.

“Rose, this is James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, and Remus Lupin,” Sirius introduced, gesturing at each of them as he said their names. “Guys, this is Rose.” They all murmured kind greetings at her and she took a seat by the window after Sirius helped her load away her luggage onto the shelf above. The train had just started, and they were slowly beginning to leave Platform 9 ¾. Rose pressed her face against the window, scanning the crowd anxiously in search of her mother. As she fogged up the glass a bit with her breath, she hoped silently to herself that she’d be able to see her just one more time.

“Looking for someone?” Sirius wondered, taking the window seat opposite of hers, and staring out at the crowd of witches and wizards and muggle parents. “My mother,” Rose answered absentmindedly, her eyes raking over every face to find her mother. Her mother’s eyes lit up when they met Rose’s; she waved her arms at Rose, a wide smile coming across her face. Rose waved back happily, never taking my eyes off of her mother. Suddenly, Rose wasn’t so terribly frightened anymore; she had a feeling that she may like Hogwarts after all.
