A/N: The next chapter or two (specifically this one) are going to skip forward through time and change locations fairly often. I’m trying to get to the next stage of the book, which I’m really excited about. I don’t think many people are following this, but I love writing it so I’ll probably keep going until the second wizarding war ends. :)
Months after leaving Hogwarts
“I can’t believe I’m doing this right now,” Lily was saying, shaking her head at her reflection in the mirror before her. Behind her was Rose’s reflection, whose eyes were fixed on the curls she was creating in Lily’s hair. Growing up with the lifestyle of a muggle, the two friends had grown to appreciate the simple pleasures of the warmth of a curling iron damaging one’s hair for the sake of beauty.
“Do you think it’s silly? A wedding during a time like this?”
Rose sensed the solemnity in Lily’s voice and put down the curling iron to look straight into her eyes. “If you ask me, I think it’s the best time for it. We still have lives to live, Lil. We need a bit of light in this world we’re living in. You and James are in love now, so no, I couldn’t think of a better time. There isn’t one. This is your day and I want you to forget about everything else, okay?”
Lily’s eyes lit up at the mention of him, and couldn’t stop the bubbling feeling of excitement in her chest. “I know it’s only a matter of time until Sirius gets the same idea…” she trailed off, looking up at Rose with a grin. Rose blushed but couldn’t help the smile that tugged up at the corners of her lips.
“How do you like it?” she asked Lily a few minutes later, holding up a hand mirror so she could see the back.
“It’s beautiful, Rose. Thank you so much.”

James stood alone at the end of the aisle, nervously clenching and unclenching his fits. A hand flew up to his hair to run his fingers through it – another nervous habit he’d had since as long as he could remember. He didn’t have a reason to be nervous… this was Lily. His Lily. But all the same, he couldn’t help the feeling that there were about a thousand flapping butterflies in his stomach.
The doors before him flew open, revealing the bridesmaids and groomsmen. First came Peter with Victoria Abbot, a friend of Lily’s from Hufflepuff, and then Remus with Keira Reilly from Gryffindor. Last to enter was James’ best man and Lily’s maid of honor, Sirius Black and Rose Garland. He offered his arm to her and she took it happily, hooking her arm around his as though they’d done it a million times before. Sirius looked down at her with an expression on his face that looked as though he was staring at the entire universe in her eyes and she back up at him with much the same face. James knew the look that Sirius had on his face well – he’d been looking at her like that since first year.
James’ breath suddenly caught in his throat as Lily appeared in the doorframe, looking as beautiful as he’d ever seen her. She was made up lightly (she never needed makeup anyway) and her red hair fell in curls past her shoulders that he assumed was Rose’s work. The music began, but James didn’t hear it. He didn’t even see shaggy-haired and grinning Sirius by his side or Rose tearing up at the look on his face – what he saw was Lily Evans.
And then she was Lily Potter.

Months later
Sirius and Rose walked hastily down Diagon Alley, keeping their heads down and holding firmly onto each other’s hands. They were there on business for the Order, and were supposed to be following Lucius Malfoy through Nocturne Alley, until he caught on to them. Now they were hurrying through the near empty streets, sure that they were now being followed themselves. Rose cast a glance over her shoulder, and sure enough there were two hooded figures following them closely.
