The drive back was silent at first after the arcade scuffle, but the others soon descended into the music once more.
Scott was in the driver seat, swaying to the radio as Jean did beside him.Kurt and jubilee remained as energetic as the ride in, with their arms in the air, laughing as they danced in the small space of the backseat.
We were almost back to the mansion now, and I could see the building through the gaps trees in the distance.A sensation went through me, a shiver up my spine and goosebumps over my bare arms. It was the taste of grief in the air.I breathed out, frowning at the bad feeling.
I looked out to the trees and the mansion beyond when a silver streak catches my eyes, I blink and it was gone. It was like a ray of sun between the trees, but silver and metallic.I glance to the others and see the flash went unnoticed by them, distracted by the good vibes, opposite to what I was feeling.
I shake off the sensation, deciding to ignore it and join Kurt and jubilee in their strange dancing, getting elbowed once or twice as the volume increased.
I smirk as jubilee accidentally swings her arms at Kurt, knocking him in his head and her eyes widen comically as she apologises.
I catch jeans eye in the front mirror, they sparkle blue with her giggling. Were much closer to the school now, and my sinking feeling comes back worse. I snap my head to the side, looking through the thin trees at the mansion.
The hairs on my arms stand on end and then, suddenly and loudly, the school is nothing but a pile of rubble. My heart sinks and i go cold with anticipation, only a second away from yelling out when a boom echoes and dissapears just as fast. A fiery visual appears and dissipates, and soon the mansion becomes stacks of wood and stone.I blink as I notice the students standing around on the front lawn, sage and shocked.
We roll in through the gates in silence, and I'm not sure who turned the music off.
"oh my god" jubilee whispers. We file out of the car and stand on the outskirts of the whispering crowd of students.
"she's the one"
"that's her"
"are you sure? "
"is she going to help us?"
I catch remnants of their whispers and walk forward through the crowd to see a woman standing in the centre, glancing around at the admiring eyes.
She blue, with slick red hair and striking yellow eyes. I suck in a breath.
It is Mystique. The X-men legend, when Cassandra and angel told me their stories, mystique was always my favorite.
She was the one who practically outed mutant kind the world.I notice the others by my side now, wide eyed.
"where's Alex? " Scott asks abruptly.
I straighten. His brother. The feeling that washed over me in the car. A mourning wave hits me and i suck in a breath, trying not to look at scott.
"where's my brother?!" he repeats, frantic.
A silver haired boy steps forward, glancing towards the rubble.
"I'm pretty sure I got everybody"
Hank steps forward, an obvious sadness in his eyes.
"Alex was closest to the blast" he states regretfully.
I watch as Scotts eyes scan the remnants of the school, eyes watering.
"Alex" he mumbles.Jean steps forward and rests a hand on his shoulder before he shrugs her off and jogs to the mansion in grief.
I start towards following them but falter for a second as I notice a sound.
The whirring in the distance, too far away to see, but I can here them. Helicopters approaching.
I narrow my eyes before running after the four of them once again.Scott let's his tears fall as he stands at the edge of a shallow crater, jean behind him with a supportive hand on his shoulder. I feel the waves of anguish from him.
I hear the helicopters getting closer, exchanging a glance with jean who notices them as well.
"we have to move" I say to the three of them. The helicopters appear over the trees, four in total, and military size.
"PLEASE REMAIN CALM. MEDICAL ASSISTANCE IS ON THE WAY"
A loud, automatic voice rings out, and we duck further behind a short stone wall.We watch silently as the helicopters land on the lawn near the students, and soldiers in heavy gear begin to file out. i ready the shadows, forming the in my fists, vigilant.
I watch as a woman steps forward, holding up what seemed like a badge to the soldiers, but her voice was drowned out by the still running blades of the aircraft's.
I narrow my eyes as one particular man walks forward. He takes his sunglasses off and I gasp, stepping backwards. its him.
"fire!" stryker yells and an exotic charge drops all the students on the lawn, unconscious. He walks through the bodies, pointing as he does, but it is him.
It's him. They take the slumping bodies of hank, mystique and two others I don't know of into their carrier helicopters.
A soldier walks our way and we all crouch down, fast.
"what do we do" Scott whispers."keep quiet" jean replies.
"X ray 7, I'm doing a final sweep of the ground" the soldier relays into the talkie on his shoulder before checking the soldiers around him.
He walks right by us, stopping and looking around. If not for jean, he'd have spotted us instantly.
But instead, his eyes slide right over us."clear!" he calls out and begins leaving.
i want to thank jean for her trick, i want to say anything helpful, but my mind is stuck and my throat is closed. it was him. Stryker.
"thanks jean" Scott says, before peering over our stone wall cover to the bodies they place in the helicopters.
"we have to help them-Kurt, can you get us in that thing? "He blinks as Scott. "you vant to get in there?! Vhat if the soldiers see us? "
"don't worry. They won't see us, trust me" jean says, confident in herself.
Kurts eyes flash between us and the aircraft before sighing.
"hold on" he warns. My last thought before kurt teleports us away is of how i was going to kill stryker.
