Shawn hesitated before he picked up the phone. He was nervous about what she would say. It's not that he didn't know how she felt, he was only unsure of how he would handle it if something went wrong, or if someone found out. He told himself he was just being silly and finally hit the call button. It rang once, twice, 3 times before going to voicemail. He wasn't surprised. Disappointed but not surprised. She was a busy girl. And he knew that any chance she could she was spending her time with her family, or her friends back in Miami. "I cant take things so personally, " Shawn thought to himself "if she could have taken the call she would have. She's not avoiding me.." but he only told himself that to avoid his feelings. He was wondering what could be keeping her so busy, when his phone rang in his hand. He looked down and sure enough it was her. He let it ring until the last second to pick it up. He took a silent deep breath so she wouldn't be able to tell how anxious he was. Finally she spoke and broke the silence.
"Hey," she said. " you called...I didn't expect you to be up this late..." she trailed off. Shawn was meticulously calculating his next move. If he told her he had been waiting up just to talk she would think he was crazy, then again he didn't want to give her the impression that he didn't care. Because the truth was he had cared for a long time. And she knew that. He didn't wanna brush it off anymore and he knew that stalling would only make things worse. His heart was pounding so fast he wondered if she could hear it. But he realized he hadn't said anything. Just drowning in his own thoughts.
"I'm sorry, I didn't wanna bug you, but it was getting late," he started. "I don't want to put this off. What you said the other day..." then he stopped. He could tell she was making that face on the other end of the phone. The one where she bites her lip and closes her eyes like she's thinking really hard about something as if she was wishing for an alternate reality than the one she was currently living in. He didn't want to make her feel bad but he needed to get it off his chest. "I don't want people to find out about this. And you know We can't stay on the phone long or Matthew is going to find out...."
"I'm happy with him Shawn, it's just better like this. It doesn't matter what I said because we know it's never going to happen. That was just a dream ok. I drank too much that's all."
"Really?" He asked.
She paused. Had she really drank that much or was she just making excuses...? She shook it off. "Yes." She said finally but Shawn didn't miss a beat.
"Then meet me." Another pause. "you know where."
