My body is completely numb from the news. I pace it out of the shop and get straight into the car. As I am driving home, my mind wanders into the last conversation I had with Josh.

"A lot has been going on, Grace. Nowhere is safe anymore." He breathed in a hushed tone.

"Why can't it just end? So many people have died." I told him, gripping my phone tighter.

"You know the answer to that, Gigi." He said, frustration clear in his voice

"This is getting ridiculous. This war will never end, why can't you just see that." I almost shouted.

"Oh my God, Grace, why can't you just listen for once! You're making me angry and I have had a very stressful day." He yelled, making me jump.

"I'm sorry." I squeaked

"No. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have snapped." He huffed. "You know I wouldn't do anything without a reason behind it."

"I know," I said, wrapping my blanket tighter around myself.

"I've got to go. Listen, I love you, Gigi." He said, softly.

"I love you too, Josh," I told him before putting the phone down.

That conversation was short lived. Who knows, it may be the last.  The drive took less time than I anticipated. I walk into my house and throw my bag down.

"Oh, Hi, Gigi, you weren't very long." She says whilst sipping her coffee.

"Mum! What is this about?" I ask urgently whilst throwing down the newspaper.

She looks at it for a few minutes and tears well up in her blue eyes.

"Well, it was only a matter of time, wasn't it. Before Lucian found us." She weeps.

I start to say something, but I am interrupted by the phone ringing. I dash to it quickly.

"Hello?" I say.

"Gigi, is that you, Grace?" Max's voice ring throughout my ears.

"Yes Max, this is me. What's wrong?"

"Where are you? What are you doing?"

"Nothing, I'm just sat on the sofa. Why? What is it?"

"Grace. They're coming." Max sobs.

"Who's coming? Max, you're scaring me."I say, knowing the answer to my question.

"The Pitiless! I can't get home until tomorrow, I'm not going to be there to protect you!"

"Max, please tell me this isn't as bad as I think it is?" I beg.

"I have to go. Gigi, I love you so much." He said and hangs up.

Are The Pitiless coming for me?

---

I toss and turn in my bed. I can't sleep. What's the point? Surely if they were going to take us they would have done it by now? I reassure myself. I look at my clock. 11.22PM. They have thirty-eight minutes to come and get me.

"Please! No, he's just a child! Oscar!" My mother shouts from downstairs.

I sit bolt upright in bed. They're here. The Pitiless are here. They are threatening my youngest brother. The mere thought of one of those disgusting men even thinking about my brother has me bolting out of my room and down the stairs.

I run into the living room where all the commotion was taking place. Standing at my baby brother's side is an extremely tall man. His muscles look like they are strong enough to rip me in half. One of his filthy hands is holding a gun to Oscar's head. Another, slightly shorter man is on the other side of Oscar, staring at my mother. The second I step into the living room, everybody's eyes are on me.

"Grace!" My mother sobs, clutching her chest. I see the two men smirk at each other.

"Well, well, well, look who it is," the shorter man laughs, crossing his arms. "Grace Prescott." He grins whilst licking his lips. "We have been to hell and back trying to find you."

"Don't even think about it." My mother growls. "You so much as look at her and I swear to God-"

"Listen here, lady, this isn't my Kid that has a gun to his head." He retaliates."I don't think you have much room to threaten me, do you?"

"Please, don't!" I shout, grabbing my mother's arm. "Please," I repeat.

Both men snigger at me. "Grace, you do realise you don't have a choice?" The man with the gun laughs. "We wouldn't risk our lives to break into your house, threaten your little brother with a gun and then head home." He grins. "Let's make a deal, shall we Grace."

"I won't make a deal with anyone." I stand tall.

"If you say so." The tall one shrugs and cocks the gun. My heart nearly stops.

"No! Wait!" I yell, running forwards and pushing the hair out of my face. "What is the deal?"

"If you come with us, we won't hurt anyone in this house." They look over at each other and nod. "However, If you don't, then you're welcome to watch us blow your brother's and your mother's brains to nothing," he says, lightly tapping the gun on Oscar's side.

If I say no, I will be orphaned and my baby brother will die. If I say yes, I'm a disappointment because I gave in to them. I have to go. My brother has so much more to live for and so does my brother.

"Deal." I say, looking shamefully at the floor. "You don't hurt anyone else in this house."
