Chapter 1

My head, it won't stop pounding. My fingers press against my temples, my pulse throbbing against them and I sigh, staring at the stack of work on my desk.

How could this literally get any harder?

I feel as if I've been staring at the same page for an hour, but it's only been ten minutes since I started reading this book.

I work at a book publishing facility, where they hire fifty people to go through thousands of pages to see if a book is worth looking into. We're known as The Scientific. Don't ask me why our company is called that, because I will not, nor will I ever be able to answer that question.

A knock at my office door stirs me from my day dream.

"Bren, darling, your Mother is here to see you." Our secretary Linda tells me, smiling. My annoying Mother pushing her way through the door.

"I brought you a coffee, figured you'd need an extra push to get through the rest of the day,"

"Why would you say that? Do I look as bad as I feel?"

"Yes, but worse." She sits on a chair and relaxes her feet on the table.

"You know, you really don't need to come to my job Mom, I can handle this stuff on my own."

"Oh I know, I just like to annoy you,"

"Well you're unsurprisingly good at it," I roll my eyes and stare back at the terrible book, which I then decide to throw into the box labeled 'Hell no.' All that person's work down the drain. Maybe it could have gone into the 'Well probably not' box, but that would've had to been on a better day.

"Well, surprisingly I did come to tell you something important."

"And you couldn't have called?"

"I don't know how to use that text machine."

"You mean IPhone?" I smirk at her. She hates to be looked at as stupid.

"Brenna, move on..." she snaps, running her hands through her light brown hair. "Anyways your sister is coming to town."

"Which one?"

"Stella, apparently she's pregnant, but she's probably just gained weight, so she thinks she's pregnant."

"Or...the other option is...she's pregnant. I mean it's believable...she's twenty seven with a husband, and she's been married for five years."

"Yeah, Bren I know...I remember, I was there when she got married."

"Well I thought I'd refresh your memory."

Mom glares at me and opens up a magazine.

"Well she's coming on Sunday, which is three days away if you weren't aware...and she's staying with you," Mom throws the magazine on the table and stands grabbing her purse and walking towards the door. "Sunday night seven o'clock dinner at home, be there or I'll murder you." She smiles deviously and walks out of my office, leaving me to read these awful books.
