My eyes blinked open, slowly adjusting to the sunlight filtering in through the trees leaves. Looking around the clearing I had situated myself in last night, it occurred to me that living here might not be so bad after all. Except I was without a pack. I shake the thought away, standing up and stretching my legs. They were sore from the cold, and my fur was still wet from the rain. Today will be better, I promise myself. It had to be. Somehow.

Depression took over a few minutes later. I slumped back down to the ground, covering my head with my paws and squeezing my eyes shut. Did my family miss me? Were they distraught that I was an outcast? Were they happy I was gone? The questions tormented me, playing through my mind one after another, though I knew I would never discover the answer to many of them. It when on for hours, the questions, until I retreated farther into my brain, into the section that contained my memories.

He was there, in my mind. His muscles stood out beneath his fluffy white fur. He stood on top of a cliff overlooking the ocean, a stop we frequented together. Warm chocolate colored eyes looked deep into my soul. His head was tilted, as if asking me why I was there. Then he straightened, staring at me, his eyes intense.

"Why did you let them do this to me? Why, Lyssi? Why did you let me die?"

"Please, Alex, I tried to save you! There were too many!"

My voice rang out, and he turned away from me. Then the vision changed. He was lying on the ground before me as Solaren wolves retreated quickly. His snowy white fur was tainted with crimson blood. His throat lay in tatters on the floor around me. Blood still flowed steadily from the gaping wound in his stomach. His eyes had glazed over though they were still turned to me. I could hear my own voice, as if in the distance.

"Alex! No!"

My eyes snapped open then. Night had fallen around me, and far off in the distance, I heard the unmistakable howl of a wolf who found her prey. I knew the voice, it was from my own, or my former, Lunari pack. They had found me! I would be dead in a matter of minutes if I stayed here, for I'm sure the entire pack had the orders to kill me if I was on their land again, which I was now.

I bounced to my feet, turned away from the howl and began to run for my life.

Hey guys! I know it's short, but I'm trying to ease into it. Comment on what you think of it.
