I'm normal. Or at least I was until my life turned upside-down and everything changed. I still can't figure out if it was a good or bad change.
Let's go back to where it all started. 6th grade.
New school.
New state.
We had recently moved from Washington. To New York. My dad just HAD to accept his new job at Google.
Before we moved, I had tons of friends, had great grades, and did well in everything. My best friends Desiree and Patrick, begged me to stay and live with one of them.
Nope. Not happening. My dad wanted me to go with him so he could have someone. My mom died last year in a car accident and my dad hadn't moved on since. They were married with two kids, my older sister Britney and me. My sister was 19 and a at college. I was 12.
Anyway we moved to New York. Because all my friends were in Washington, I knew absolutely no one. And as always, because I was shy, I was alone. So I started 6th grade. Two months into the school year, I met one person that wasn't a teacher.
And guess who that was. A person who would be my friend? A hot guy? No, it was the librarian was my first "friend" in the first two months of school. Sad, right? Yea, I know. No one else wanted to talk to me because I read books and stayed in the library all day.
So, the first three and a half months went by before Thanksgiving and that is when I thought I would see my dad again. Because he worked for Google, I lived with my dad's coworkers daughter. Well, not really live more like a guest in their home. She is really nice and all, but she mostly is on her phone. She will get off of it to cook and help me with homework if I need it, so it's not child abuse or neglect.
Where was I? Oh yes, Thanksgiving. So Thanksgiving comes around and a chance to see my dad again. That was the worst Thanksgiving ever. Now, now, I know what you are probably thinking. 'You got to have a nice evening with your dad right?' See that's where you are wrong. He had to work! So I had to hang out with the coworkers daughter, who was just as sad as I was because her dad was working too.
"Hey Katrina?" I said.
She looked up from her phone. "What's up?"
"I don't really know. I have one friend and it's the librarian."
"How come no one wants to be your friend? You are a good person. Is it you just being shy again?"
"I go to the library for fun, Kat. And yes I am shy. Have you even met me?"
She laughed. "One, who cares if you WANT to go to the library? I bet there is at least one person who likes to go there. And two, yes I have met you. You are one of the smartest, awesomest people I know."
"Awesomest isn't a word." I said.
"Well, it is now. That's not the point though. My point is that it shouldn't matter where you go or what you do. You are awesome and should be able to have any friend you want."
"Thanks Kat."
She then got up and gave me a hug, which shocked me because she never does that. We both needed it though.
We got through Thanksgiving together. The next day, she tried to make me go Black Friday shopping with her. I told her I didn't want to go with a bunch of crazy people all anting a good deal. As I am walking back to my room, she runs up behind me and tackles me to the ground.
"What're you doing? Get of me! I can't breath!"
She rolled off of me. "I can't have you disrespecting Black Friday now can I? It's very important".
"Yeah, ok. Next time can I not almost die?"
"Whatever. I wouldn't have actually killed you." She then helped me to my feet.
Just as things were going well, of course it went very bad.
There was a loud rumbling noice from a distance. The building started to shake. "RUN!" Kat yelled at me. "Go to the basement and stay there!".
"No! I will not leave you!". I started crying.
Before she could say anything else, a part of the building collapsed on top of her legs. I tried to reach out to her but was blinded by a bright light. I turned away and covered my eyes. When the light was gone, I uncovered my eyes and wished I hadn't. In front of me, half the building was gone. I was looking out to a New York that was crumbling. I looked over to where Kat was and saw she was covered in rubble.
Adrenaline must have been fueling me because I ran to her side and removed almost all the rubble. "Hey...Kiddo." She said. I could tell every breath was labored and hard for her. "Glad.. you... are...safe."
"Save your breath." I said, crying harder than before. "I'm gonna call 911. Just stay with me. It will be fine. I promise."
She laughed softly and sighed. "No, my time has come. Tell... our...dad's.." she never finished her sentence.
"KAT!" I was sobbing and choking not wanting to think the truth was real. "No no no no no. Kat. Please. Please, just wake up. PLEASE!"
Being 12, I didn't understand she wasn't playing games with me. I thought that the doctors would come and save her. I thought everything would go back to normal. I didn't understand that no matter how much I shook her, she wouldn't wake up. She was gone.
I sat with her head in my lap for what feels like hours, when it was only minutes. I was filled with dark thoughts and loneliness. I didn't know Katrina very well but she was the closet thing to a sister that was around.
Finally, there was a hand on my shoulder. I didn't know who it was but at a glance I could tell it was a woman because of the slenderness of it. I sat there for a while longer thinking about how little I wanted to be alive anymore. I felt the hand shift as if the person was looking around.
"You must come," they said. The voice was soft, caring, that of a woman. "It is time for you to know the truth."
