Taming Kaos

When I was four years old my mom died while giving birth to my brother. As you can imagine it was very sad for the whole family. Since we didn't have a very big family it made everyone grow closer. I was so busy taking care of my family that I didn't have time for friends. The truth was that I didn't have friends. While I was loved and cherished at home, I was very lonely and unwanted at school. Little did I know that my life was about to change.

It was just an ordinary day. The birds were chirping, kids were laughing, and parents were heading to work. Right as I was about to walk into the building, something caught my eye. Of course, I decided to take a peek to see what was going on. There were these two bullies picking on a boy. Even though I had never personally encountered them, I knew they were bad news. Once I saw them, I got goosebumps all over. Every bone in my body was frozen solid. I couldn't move because I was so scared.

I wanted to run but instead, I made the mistake of opening my big mouth. Next thing I knew I was saying "Hey! Don't you have somewhere to be?'' "As slow as you walk you need every minute to get there.'' Then the biggest bully Jenna turned around and said "You should learn to mind your own business or you will regret it.'' I didn't know which girl was more shocked that I stood up to them Jenna or the other bully Darbie.

For a minute I didn't know what to do but all of the sudden my fist started to clench. Darbie noticed my clenched fist. She quietly whispered to Jenna. I don't know what Darbie said to her but it triggered Jenna. Jenna shifted her attention from the boy to me. Immediately he stood frozen. He was the exact way I was when I first saw the bullies. I was so focused on the boy I didn't even notice Darbie moved behind me. Then Jenna grabbed my collar and pulled me up to eye level. Right when I thought she was going to punch me the bell rang. Wow, talk about saved by the bell! Jenna dropped me right on the hard ground and said: "This isn't over yet." Darbie backed Jenna up by cracking her knuckles.

Once the bullies left I started to walk to class. I only had five minutes to get there. While I was walking the boy caught up to me and said: "Hey, thanks for what you did back there I owe you one!" I replied saying "It was nothing." "Pshhh it was to me. I could have died back there!" We both started to laugh. He looked at me and then said, "Aren't you in my homeroom, you have Mr. Niblett, right?" "Yea..." In my mind, I tried to recall if I had ever really seen him before. I usually just go straight to my seat and put my head in a book to avoid the awkwardness of seeing and hearing others talk to their friends. If he was in my class I was completely oblivious. At that moment, I realized I have no social skills. I wanted to continue the conversation, but I wasn't sure how. Then I realized I didn't even know his name! While I was having this conversation in my mind I heard someone say... "So, what is the name of my rescuer?" I awkwardly said, "My name is Skylar, Skylar Johnson" "If you can't ever remember it think if the video game Skylanders." Immediately he said, "Wait a minute, you like Skylanders?!" "I LOVE Skylanders! It's so fun trying to defeat Kaos!" 

We kept talking about Skylanders until we reached Mr. Niblett's classroom. Before I walked inside He said, "Oh, by the way, my name is Ezekiel but most of my FRIENDS call me Zeke." I tried to contain my excitement when he said the word friends. Could it be I made a friend? Instead of going to my normal seat and drawing, Zeke asked if I wanted to go to Seaside Sunrise. I was about to say yes but right before I did the bell rang.

Just like that my life changed. Zeke waited for me after class to go eat and the conversation picked up right where it left off. At the diner, we exchanged phone numbers and Zeke said he would friend me on Facebook. The rest of my day was the same, but something was different. I had someone who I could talk to, someone who would listen to me. I had a new friend.
