I hopped my way down the stairs while I brushed my hair. If I hurry up a little, I will be on time. Why does school has to start so early in the morning? I tossed the comb on the couch in the living room and entered the kitchen. While I took a bite of my apple I noticed a yellow post-it that was stuck on the fridge. With a confused face I took it and read it out loud:
'Wake Charlie up and bring him to school. Had to go to work early.
-mom.'
I crumbled up the little piece of paper on tossed it in the trash. I will probably be late for school again. But Charlie will always be my number one priority, no matter what. "Charlie, wake up. You have to go to school. You don't want to be late, do you?"
Charlie groaned. "I don't want to, I'm too tiered,"
"To bad. If you wake up now, I don't have to get the bucket with water," I said teasingly. "I am up!" I just laughed and helped Charlie get ready. "Here, eat this apple on our way to school. I already made your lunch and have put it in the back of your wheelchair," I made Charlie put a jacket on because it was rather chilly outside. "Arn't you going to be late for school?" He asked while I locked the door behind me. "Because it is almost 8:30 and your school is in the opposite direction of mine,"
"Don't worry about that. Mr. Daniels of my math class has been called sick today. So I have a free first period," I lied smoothly. Jamie don't like when I skip school just to take care of him. He would get mad at me for taking care of him and 'letting my education down because of him'.
"That's nice. You know, we are almost there. I could easily get to my school on my own. That would..."
"No," I interrupted. "But why?" I sighed and rubbed my face. "I already told you enough times Jamie. We aren't living in the nicest neighbourhood. I don't want you to get hurt,"
"But I can take care of myself!"
"I know, but I want to make sure you get to school in one piece. And besides, we are already here. I see Mrs. Applebaum already waiting next to the head entrance," I waved at her. "Be good. I love you C,"
"You too J," Charlie rolled his wheelchair towards his teacher. I didn't leave him out of my sight till I saw the doors close behind him. I sighed and walked my way to school. I considered to run or jog, but what's the point if I am already late. Class has started ten minutes ago and it would take an other twenty minutes for me to get there. If I would run I would be there faster, but I am too lazy anyways.
"Late again I see, Miss Knight. I will see you in detention, again," I sighed and nodded. "Yes, Mr. Daniels,"
I took my usual seat somewhere in the middle of the class. On the board there was a drawing of a hyperbole. And I have no idea how to draw that thing according to the formula. I sighed and slammed my pen on the table because I am frustrated. The bell rang, signalling us that the math was over. But now I have to go to English lit. "Miss Knight. Can I speak to you for a second?" My teacher asked me before I had the chance to escape. "I am sorry, but I really have to go to my next class, Mr. Daniels,"
"I understand, but it will only take a second. Please sit down," I sighed and nodded. I took a seat in front of his desk and waited for him to start the conversation. "Let me cut to the chase. You seem to always come late to my class. Care to tell why?"
"Not always. On wednesday sixth period I am never late," Mr. Daniels gave me a glare and waited for me to tell the reason behind my actions of coming late. "It's nothing sir. I just... I just overslept. I have a hard time waking up in the morning."
"I have a feeling that there is a bigger reason behind it. But this time, I will let it slide. Try to not let it happen again. But I still expect you to come to detention after school,"
"Sorry, but with all due respect sir, I can't. I have a appointment after school,"
"I don't care. Detention is detention, Miss Knight. Reschedule that appointment and I will see you after school,"
"But...-"
"No buts, I said to reschedule your appointment. Now go to your next class. Here is a note with why you are late," I muttered a thank you under my breath. Before I could leave the room Mr. Daniels stopped me. "And if you don't come to detention, there will be consequences," I only nodded and closed the door behind me. Great, how am I going to solve this? I need to pick up Charlie after school. What I am afraid of is that if I do not show up, that he will go off on his own. And I don't want that because our neighbourhood isn't the safest. I examined the note that Mr. Daniels gave to me. Just then I bumped into someone. I landed on my butt and saw that all my books and other schoolwork were spilled in the hallway. A groan escaped my mouth. "Watch where you're going," a deep male voice said. I looked up and saw it the infamous Connor O'Brain. He glared at me while picking up his bag. Without saying an other word, he left without looking back. "Sure, leave me here on the floor with thousands of books and papers sprawled all over the hallway," I sighed and started to pick everything up. I frowned when I picked up a flyer kind of paper.

I started at it in shock. 25.000$, that's all I need. That's all Charlie needs. I said I will do what ever it takes to help Charlie, and if that means confronting Connor O'Brian, then I will do it.
