(Since The Contract Started.)

❝Hello, Karan?❞ Varun greats after swiping to answer the incoming call.

❝Varun, is Alia alright?❞ Karan questions with worry visible in his voice, the tone of voice not going unnoticed by Varun.

❝Yes, she's just gone out to do some shopping, I told her not to, but she was persistent on stocking up the groceries. Why? What's wrong?❞ Varun says rather hurried, questions flooding his conscious as he waits for a reply.

❝I . . . Alia hasn't been answering any of my calls❞ Karan informs Varun who instantly feels relieved, grateful it isn't something too serious.

❝Maybe, her line is busy?❞ Varun comments hearing Karan hum negatively in response.

❝I've been trying to get through to her several times this week, at first I thought the same. But it can't be a coincidence every time, Varun.❞

❝But you still haven't made it clear as to why you're trying to call her. Is it serious? I could always pass the message on to her for you.❞

❝You're not going to like it . . .❞

❝Karan?❞ Varun says in an I'm listening tone.

❝Well, it's been well over a month since the both of you signed that contact. And remember what we discussed, about Alia receiving the money once the first month was complete?❞ Varun hums, waiting for Karan to continue, not really understanding in what direction the conversation was heading. ❝She's been completely ignoring me ever since I mentioned the topic of coming into my office so we could discuss the subject.❞

❝You mean, she hasn't taken any money yet?❞ Varun questions.

❝No, she hasn't. Since then, I've tried calling her, and even you, as a matter of fact, but for some reason the call never comes through.❞

❝Karan, I haven't had any missed calls from you--❞ Varun pauses, ❝You're not implying that Alia deleted them, are you?❞

❝Well, I did make the calls straight after calling her phone. Unless you think it's some sort of coincidence.❞

Now, when Varun comes to think of it, Alia was messing around with his phone a lot. She would snatch it from him and run away, him chasing her playfully around the house.

❝But, why wouldn't she want the money Karan?❞ Varun questions.

❝I'm not sure, maybe you should ask her . . . you're in a closer position to her than me. I mean, I've noticed you both have bonded quite a bit.❞ Varun can feel his neck burn at the statement.
