Friday, May 18th. 11 AM. New York City - My Apartment.
My alarm goes off and I sigh with much disappointment. I hate getting out of bed, even if I have slept nearly the entire morning away.
After checking my emails and whatnot, I get out of bed and go to my kitchen so I can get my hands on a nice cup of coffee and prepare myself for what lies ahead.
I am in the ensemble at Phantom of the Opera, and we have a show tonight, so that coffee is what's going to put the spring in my step that I need to get my day started.
On a typical day, I spend most of the afternoon being lazy and watching TV before warming up my voice and heading to the theatre for the show. However, today feels different. So, after I finish my coffee, I grab one of my several water bottles and head to my room to start getting ready.
Just before I get into the shower, my phone vibrates. I check it and I've gotten a text from my best friend and fellow cast member, Rachel Kane. She's been the main Christine in Phantom since I started almost three years ago. She is INCREDIBLE!
Anyways, I read the text and my heart sinks a little bit.
"Hey Em, I'm gonna have to call out of work tonight. My flight back to New York has been delayed for six hours at the shortest, so I am definitely not going to make it back in time for the show tonight. So sorry we won't get to have our lunch date anymore, we will have to do it tomorrow! Have a good show tonight! ❤️😍"
Oh shit. This is NOT good!
Rachel is not going on as Christine anymore tonight; which means the understudy, Justine Hahn, will be going on in her place.
However, Justine is on vacation until next week, so she is not available.
We have an alternate Christine, who does the weekend matinee shows. Her name is Danielle, and she would normally be the next person to be called in. But, she is in college and has classes all week, so she is only available to work the weekends.
With nobody to play Christine at tonight's show, it is uncertain what will end up happening. All I know is that there are close to 1,650 people who have purchased tickets to tonight's show and we cannot let them down!
I'm sure something will get figured out.
