Chapter One : Equinox
"COME ON! You think I can fight those Vorkid Webspinners?" Veronica asked in disbelief, looking back at her parents. "Please, Veronica. This is the Umbra Forest. Even your friend, Lynexia, has to fight them. Every child is going through this. We had to do this at your age." Her Mother said. "Well, what good would it bring?" She sneered. She turned and saw Lynexia running towards her. "Veronica!" She finally made it to her, out of breath.
"What're you–" She started. Calamity was huffing. "Oh. I can help with that." She told her. "Aren't you supposed to be training too?" Veronica's Father asked sternly. She scowled at him. "Oh, she said I was done for the day. You can ask her yourself." She shrugged. "Now, come on!"
Equinox landed, the little bird chirping. The Vorkid Webspinners looked like they were laughing at her. The Nytekrie walked over to Lynexia. She took off the Amulet of Youthful Illusion from around the Nytekrie's neck. The small bird started to grow. Her neck lengthened and her wings spiked out. Her tail grew from her spine and she lashed it left and right. The transformation continued until she towered over the Vorkid Webspinners. The spider-like creatures froze. "You shouldn't have the Amulet on Equinox. The hatchling form looks... weird." Veronica pointed out. "I thought the same." She replied.
"Let's do this."

Taking a sip of her water, she sighed. "Today was plenty difficult for me." Veronica sighed, putting her bottle of water down. "Sure it was. You had to fight more of those mushroom looking trees while me and Equinox went on a walk until you were done!" Lynexia laughed. "How easy was your training?" Veronica shot back, her eyes narrowing. "Easy as could be. My Mom made me fight three Vorkid Webspinners with only Equinox and she had me fight one Myconid." She replied, shrugging.
"What type of Myconid is it? Isn't that kind of frustrating?" Veronica asked. "Nope. I leave the house after meals everyday. I train Equinox almost all the time. She's used to it now." The bird was perched on the tree, letting out a earsplitting screech. Calamity let out a rumbling roar and they chuckled. "Have you ever wanted to leave Umbra Forest?" Veronica asked, after the Sylesties quieted down. "Yes. I've seen what's outside, but I would never leave Umbra Forest. The stories that the elders tell–"
"The elders were trying to scare us, obviously!" Veronica interrupted, growling. "Yeah, but what if it is true? That the Nightfall Bandits will get to you and knock you out or steal your pets?" Lynexia began. "Or, what if the trolls in Trollsblight Caverns get you?" She asked. "Oh please, there are no such thing as trolls." She mocked. "You don't know that." Lynexia replied. "Alright, alright, alright. I have a ... special area. Your parents must really believe that you go outside to train a lot so after you're done with a meal, come to my hide away." She whispered.
"'Secret' I don't even know where that is."
"I'll show you." Veronica looked over at her parents. "I'm going to– uh –train with Lynexia! I'll be back before– uh –lunch!" She hesitated. "Alright!" Her Mother called. "Okay, let's go." Veronica told Lynexia. Running into the forest, they followed the trail until they veered off. "Are you sure we're going the right way?" She whispered. "Yep." Veronica answered. Shortly after, they halted near a tall tree, taller than the other trees. There was a ladder hanging. "Nobody dares come this far since there are lots of Sylesties that roam here," she whispered, climbing up the ladder.
Following her up the ladder, she saw a Ny'vene standing before her. A young one. "Hello, Valarie. Nice to see you here." As soon as Lynexia climbed up the ladder, Valarie gripped the ladder in her jaws, pulling it up. "You're too tall, Equinox. Here." She pulled the Amulet of Youthful Illusion out of her bag and put it back on the Nytekrie. The bird shrank back to hatchling form. Giggling, she held out her hands and Equinox settled down in her hands. Walking inside the treehouse, there were pillows and stuff.
"Shouldn't we be training?" Lynexia asked. "Nah, it's fine." Veronica snickered. "So why am I here?" Lynexia asked, moving her hair out of her face. Putting the bird down on the floor, Valarie looked at Equinox and roared. Falling down, Veronica laughed loudly. "Are you okay, Equinox?" She asked, picking up the hatchling-sized owl. "Alright, I'll take the amulet off you and you go fly for a while." Setting her outside, she pulled the amulet off and Equinox immediately took off. Sticking the amulet inside her backpack, she looked at Veronica.
"Oh! Right, why you're here. You're here because I want to talk to you about something." Lynexia nodded. "I want you to sneak out of your home tonight and meet me here." She whispered. "Why on Earth do you–" She was interrupted by a loud screech. Turning around she spotted birds flying away from the treetops in the distance. "Uh-oh."
Bursting out the door, she jumped down and landed on her knees. "I have to get to Equinox!"
