The Troubles-

There is no better feeling in the world than walking down the hallways with a group of followers. Nothing.

I have my two best friends on either side of me, Tara and Maya. We cause all kinds of trouble around the school because, we are the rebels. Directly behind me stands, Jacob, Dillon and Ethan. They are the three, hottest boys in the school. They also happen to like girls with attitude. Lucky for me and my two fellow Troubles, we like boys who are bad. But secretly, they are all sweet and shit. Just like how Jacob can make me melt by a simple wink. But I never show it unless it’s just the two of us.

By the way, my name is, Melissa. Leader of The Troubles. Name of the group was given by our social studies teacher, Mr. Talon. Intimidating name but he is pretty cool, as far as authority goes. Just about every other teacher in the school pisses us off though.

Dillon and Maya sit together, him with his arm around her waist. Tara has seated herself in Ethan’s lap and his arms are planted firmly around her waist. Cute. Something I admire. Then, there is me and Jacob, we sit in the back (next to the other four) in separate chairs but he pulls mine closer to his just to put his arm around me. I lean into him and remove my aviator sunglasses from my eyes. “Looks like we’re a bit early, we didn’t have to scare any nerds out of their seats.” Maya snickers. I smirk and brush a lock of dyed hair out of my face.

You see we are those kids that have all dyed their hair and pierced their ears countless amounts of times. We dress in leather and denim. We are the badasses of the school. We own the school.

“Hello class. Today we are learning about the angles and substitutions of-“ I tune out the Math teacher and look at my phone screen. I have a message from Tara.

From: Tara

I’m already bored

I laugh and respond.

Yes, I am texting in class! Guess what else I am doing? I am chewing gum. Yea, I know I’m going to rot in hell for my sins. No, the teachers honestly let us Troubles do whatever we want. We can do whatever, say whatever but, we can’t get caught by the principal. If we do then, the teachers leave us out to dry. We would be screwed. I am not surprised they have given up on giving us detention. We always sneak out and all it does is, provoke us to get revenge for locking us in a room for eight hours.

Good luck with that.

After first and second period it’s time for lunch. The Troubles sit at our usual spot, in the corner. This is the place in the cafeteria that none of the other kids sit at. They all know that they will be, not so nicely escorted away from our spot.

Like I said before, we own the school. We are the kings and queens.

My combat boots are loud on the tiles in the silent lunch room. Everyone is silent as we pass them. None of the smaller kids dare make eye contact.

Sure there are some kids were friends with but, they are actually cool people. Like, literal cool people. But, they have their own place in the lunch room.

I take a seat at our table and Jacob sits next to me, Ethan, Tara, Maya and Dillon on the other side of the table.

“See that new girl over there?” Tara points to a girl in a hoodie and a skirt that goes to her ankles. “Yeah.” I nod and continue to scan the fresh meat. “She looks like a nerd.” Maya laughs. I nod and squint my eyes, tilting my head to the side. The girl is trying to find a place to sit, she’s going to have to start at the bottom like the rest of us did.

“Bet you she’s going to have to sit in the bathroom and eat.” Ethan says. Dillon smirks and then fixes the collar of his leather jacket. “Maya, does my hair look ok?” He asks, looking at his reflection in his phone. Maya nods, “Looks great, as usual.” Dillon looks at her and grimaces. “You’re being a kiss ass.” Maya puts her head down.

“Well, you’re being an ass. So Dillon, why don’t you just go sit with the band geeks? Because if you can’t stop being an asshole to your girlfriend then you know that coach would love to hear you’re breaking a rule.” Jaocb snaps, standing and slamming his hands on the table. He is the captain of the football team. Dillon ducks his head in shame and shakes his head. “That’s what I thought. Now apologize.” Jacob sits back down.

Dillon looks at Maya, “Sorry babe.” She kisses his cheek and whispers something that I can’t hear, making him smile.

I lean in close to Jacob's ear. “What rule did he break?” Jacob turns his head, “If you can’t be respectful to a woman than you can’t respect the opposite team.” He smiles.

That smile. It could make you melt into a puddle on the ground. I nod and turn my head to Tara and Ethan. They are making out. I crinkle my nose and throw a carrot from my lunch tray at them. “You guys have to come up for air at some point!” I say, throwing another carrot. Accept this time I miss and hit someone behind them.

I brush it off until I realize that the jock table is behind them. They are annoying and about as smart as gnats. One of the tallest boys stands up on the table and says, “So whoever threw this, just gave me an idea.” He looks around the room and then spots someone. He throws the carrot at a girl, the new girl. It nails her right on the forehead. She stands, calm at first, then picks up her peanut butter sandwich and chucks it at him. It hits him perfectly in the face. Gasps are heard throughout the lunch room. The boy peals the bread slowly from his face, I share a look with Jacob and that is when it is clear, we both know what comes next.

The table full of boys all look around and then one stands and yells out two words.

“FOOD FIGHT!”
