Tapping my foot, I realise it's colder now. At least one of us is warm. Mara's opening Chicken Delightful, keying in the alarm, so we don't have five burly armed-response men turning up at the diner. What? A girl can dream.
She opens the door, and I practically win an Olympic sprint getting inside. It's toasty in here, and the aroma of baked goods pervades everything.
I'm surrounded by cracked and faded red vinyl chairs, with art deco items scattered throughout the interior. The black and white tiles on the floor are scuffed and weathered from countless footsteps, but they gleam.
Mara drops a couple of coins into the retro 50s jukebox in the corner, and it cranks out "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum.
Hearing a knock at the door, I turn and see Frank, the fry cook, and Beth, my partner in crime. He hustles to the kitchen to prep for service, as Beth sashays over to me. She envelopes me in the hugest hug, and whispers "happy birthday, darlin". She tosses her red curls casually over her shoulder, reaches in to her pocket and hands me a velvet box. The kind you get at a high end jewellery store. I stare open-mouthed, until she closes it in my hands. "Don't be a silly goose, it's your present". I'm speechless. I put it in my pocket as Mara opens the doors, and the first of the diners enter.
By the end of service, my feet are killing me. I've managed to avoid several hands attempting to grope my ass, although old Mr Witt snuck a birthday kiss when I wasn't expecting it. I take a moment, and open the box. It's perfect. A silver and violet butterfly on a chain. I look up and see Beth wink in my direction. I blow her a kiss, put the chain back in my pocket, and start cleaning up.
