A light yet cold breeze ruffled the patrol's fur as they quietly made their way into the forest to hunt. A welcome scent suddenly filled the air: squirrel.
Aldertail was about to crouch down into the hunting position, when a flash of ginger leaped out of the bushes and landed on the squirrel, killing it with a swift bite to the neck.

“Well done Aspenpaw!” Leopardheart stood beside Aldertail, pleased that his apprentice had successfully caught some prey. Aspenpaw nodded, her eyes sparkled with happiness at being praised by her mentor, and flicked her tail. Aldertail returned the gesture and continued with the hunt.

A few moments later, the call of a thrush echoed through the branches of a tree. The unfortunate bird was sat only a few tail lengths a way, pecking at something on the ground. Aldertail immediately dropped down into the hunters crouch and silently stalked the bird until it was only a mouse length away. Quickly, he pounced onto the unexpecting thrush and killed it. Aldertail purred as the scent of fresh kill smothered him and buried the bird beside a tree and thanked StarClan for its life.

A while later, Sparrowtail,Leopardheart,Aspenpaw and Aldertail emerged through the sheltering oak tree into camp. Each of them had plenty of kill to add to the pile. Aldertail dropped his thrush and two mice onto the pile. Specklestar came up behind him.
“Great StarClan!” she meowed, “The fresh-kill pile has never looked so full this close to Leaf-Fall! Your patrol did well. You all deserve a rest.”  Aldertail nodded gratefully and crept into the Warriors den.

Stars had started to fill sky as night approached. Aldertail had already been on the Dusk patrol and there was nothing else to do. The Clan had gone to their nests full of prey, and the stack still had some food left.

Aldertail wondered about his kits and collapsed sleepily into his soft nest that lay in-between Birchleaf's empty spot and his littermates nest,Cherryleg. Sleep came easily as a wave of darkness washed over him.
