- 8th April 1980 ?
- 8th April 1980… I was dreaming !
- After a big storm, the captain of a japanese ship has been found dead. The master-at-arms suspected murder and questioned four crew members. The cook saw nothing because he was prepping breakfast. The quartermaster was doing inventory as the storm knocked down a lot of crates. The armorer could not have seen a thing, he was fixing the flag that was upside down. The first mate was hiding below deck up to 10 am because he was sea sick.
- The armorer did it.
- What ?
- The flag of Japan cannot be upside down.
I turned away from the investigator and went to the balustrade.
I woke up sweating. I was sea sick. I had a quick glance on the clock : 3.52 am. The room was strangely enlightened. I looked out of the window : the door of the house in front of mein was opened. There were police cars. I sliped on my dressing gown and took to the streets. I went into the house. The policemen knew me, I was a famous detective.
They were interrogating the suspects. I listened :
- I am sorry I didn’t call sooner… We had a fight and he retreated into his office… I didn’t know he had been killed.
Between the interrogations, a policeman informed me :
- Mr BROWN was found dead today near a candelabra by his wife, you heard her two minutes ago. When we arrived,
we realized that he had been killed in the morning two days prior. We have three other suspects : Jack the cook,
Pete the butler and Patricia the maid.
The interrogations took up again :
- I wasn’t there the whole week… so I have no idea what happened, explained Jack the cook.
- I was at the post office that morning… I could not have been there, Pete, the butler defended himself.
- It’s no secret that I never liked him… but there had been a party the day prior… so I woke up late that morning, said Patricia the maid.- So detective, do you know who killed Mr BROWN ? asked the policeman.
- Of course, if he was killed two days before today, that would be Sunday. The butler claimed he was at the post office, which are closed on sundays.
- Sleep well my son…
