"Hand over the remote, Madison!"I screamed as Madison once again tried to change the channel to The Exorcist. "You know I don't like scary movies, they scare the pee outta me!". Madison finally gave up and handed me the remote. "I'm hungry!" I said as I turned off the television and ran to the kitchen to grab a snack. Madison jogged over beside me, asking "Hey Kaylee, where did your parents run off to?".
"They just ran to the grocery store to grab some things. Although they should have been back by now..." I said as I heated up a leftover taco (my favorite food). Just as the microwave beeped to let me know me food was ready, the phone started ringing. "I'll get it!" Madison yelled as she ran to the nightstand and picked up the phone. "Hello? No, this is her best friend. Who am i speaking to? Wait, why are you calling here??" Madison said these words into the phone, leaving me completely confused as to who was on the other line and what they were talking about. Then suddenly, Madison looked up at me with tears stinging her eyes. She handed me the phone with shaky hands, and I took it with a worried look on my face.
"H-Hello?" I said into the phone. Whoever this was made Madison extremely upset, and it was hard to get a tom-boy like Madison to cry.
"Is this Kaylee Wacaser?" the woman asked through the phone. "Yes, this is Kaylee" I said. "Who am I speaking to?"
"I'm a nurse from St. Thomas Hospital. Your mother and your father....." I didn't need to hear anymore. I dropped the phone and grabbed my keys. "Come on Madison, let's go!" I said, motioning her to walk out the door. "My parents are in the hospital!" I screamed louder, because Madison didn't seem to hear me. She lifted her head up and said, "Kaylee, did you listen to everything the woman said?"
"Well, i hung up after she told me she was from the hospital and said 'your mother and father'. Why did I have to hear the rest? They're obviously at the hospital, so come on!" I yelled. Madison came over to me and grabbed my shoulders. At that moment, she told me the words that would haunt me for the rest of my life.
"Kaylee, your parents aren't in the hospital. They're dead."
