The Winecoff Hotel, was famously referred to by its designers as “absolutely fireproof”.
However in 1946, it became a real-life towering inferno. 119 people lost their lives.
The building had zero fire escapes, zero alarms or sprinklers, and one great stairwell in the middle. The stairwell was the only way to escape, but instead of providing a safe exit route, it quickly became a chimney full of noxious smoke.
