The professors are the teachers at Hogwarts that teach classes and often guide/advise their students. Professors have the power to award and dock points, give detention to students that break the rules, and write notes for certain areas and activities that are usually off limits such as the Restricted Section in the Library. Professors normally reside at the school during the school year, although some prefer to live elsewhere. Those who remain at the school throughout the night have private quarters, similar to apartments/flats, that are usually near their house's Common Room. During their free time/free period, professors typically relax in the Professors' Lounge. They are strictly prohibited from using magic or physical force to assault and/or punish students. They are able to send students to detention, but are unable to expel them without the approval of the Headmaster/Headmistress.

Professors don't require any formal education or training, but just need to possess extensive knowledge and skill in the subject and preferably have an O.W.L. or N.E.W.T. in that subject. The Headmaster/Headmistress will sometimes hire a professor even if they didn't sit their O.W.L. exams. At least three years of after-school life experience are necessary to become a professor. Many professors reside at the school during the school year, though this isn't always the case. They can live somewhere near the school or travel to and from the school by means of Apparition, Portkey, or the Floo Network. Those that remain at the school have their own private quarters within the school, similar to apartments/flats that are often near or sometimes attached to their offices. The Head of House's private quarters is located near their respective house's Common Rooms. Professors usually eat their meals in the Great Hall, though this isn't required. Each professor has at least one "free period" during the day/week.

Four professors are selected by the Headmaster/Headmistress to lead each of the respective houses. They are responsible for monitoring and maintaining the safety, welfare and discipline of all the students in each of their respective houses, corresponding with the students' parents when necessary and etc. They also collect signed permission slips from their respective house's students for field trips and etc. The Heads of House are also in charge of their house's teams and encourage them to win at events. Students that get in serious trouble have to report to their Head of House and only they can punish or discipline them, even to the point of expelling them. Each Head of House holds career counseling meetings each year with the fifth year students in each of their respective houses, advising them what N.E.W.T.-level classes they should take in preparation of their desired careers. They are responsible for making up and submitting the room assignments for students within their respective houses. When the Apparition Course takes place at the school, the Heads of House attend and help oversee the participating students from their respective houses. They can also be used as a personal reference whenever one of their former students seeks employment. Unlike at Hogwarts, professors that were sorted into other houses when they attended Ilvermorny can be selected as the Head of a different house.
