Chapter 1- Exposed
You never expect or acknowledge that your life may change. Sometimes for the best, others the worst.
I looked around me and saw this guy with the most startling blue eyes I have ever seen. I've never seen him before but when I looked at him I found a sense of belonging and warmth radiating from him.
I woke up to my alarm clock and wanted so bad to hurl it across the room for interrupting my dream. I got up and started getting ready for school. When I was ready I went downstairs to see what my parents had made for breakfast.
"Hey honey, how did you sleep last night?" Dad said.
"Fine, but dad where's mom? Usually she's making breakfast with you."
"She had to go to work early today. So that left me to make breakfast. I made pancakes I know they are not as good as your mothers but I think that they will do."
"As long as you don't burn them and the house down we will be good."
"I didn't burn down the house." He said with a sigh.
"You started the grill on fire and then you turned the grill upside down hoping it would extinguish the fire, because of that you started the counter on fire, and then the fire went from the counter onto you in a matter of seconds, because you couldn't find the extinguisher which was right next to you." I remember that day very vividly. I come down to the table and right when I sat down dad screams that the grill is on fire and I yelled at him to grab the extinguisher which was right next to him. I honestly think that mom was more worried about her kitchen then my dad.
I know that my mom loves my dad but sometimes I wonder if she might love her kitchen more. My mom always wanted to be a chef, but when she met my dad all she wanted to do was be with him.
"I'm surprised mom let you back in the kitchen." I sad with a laugh.
"She doesn't know I'm making breakfast. This can be our little secret."He said with a smirking grin.
"Okay. Do you think I can have my keys today."
"Sure, I'm getting my car back today and mom will be home by the time I have to leave so she'll drive me." he threw my keys at me, and started eating his pancakes.
I checked my phone to see the time. I only had a couple more minutes before I had to leave to go to school. I started eating my pancakes, and they were surprisingly good.
"Dad I have to leave. Love you, and see you when I get home from school." I gave him a big hug, and went out the door to the garage.
"Love you too sweetie." he said right when I closed the door to the garage. I didn't really want to go to school. It's not that I didn't like school I loved it. It was because I don't really fit in at school. I don't have any friends but, that's fine by me I don't need any friends.
I go to Cambridge High, and it's a really big and expensive school. We have a building just for the swimming pool, and had to go outside to other buildings to get to our classes. It looked like a college, and it was supposed to be one until our old high school burnt down, and we needed the building so the people who were building the college let us have it after they were done building it.
I got into the parking lot, and found a free parking spot close to the buildings that housed our lockers.
"Did you hear about the new kids that just started today" Rachel asked her best friend Becky.
"Yes, the guy is pretty hot, and I wonder if he has an accent. He looks like he's from a different country."Becky said with a exaggerated sigh.
When I walked by they just stared at me like they wanted me to be dead. I didn't worry about it, and continued on to my locker. When I walked through the doors to my locker I looked up and saw the guy. He looked exactly like the guy from my dreams, and when I looked into his eyes I saw lightning bolts flashing in his eyes. For a moment I thought I was still dreaming so I pinched myself, and found that I was very awake. So after a couple of moments staring at him, I went to my locker, and opened it. A note fell out, and I opened it. It read "You need to leave you aren't welcome here, and if you need help the door is right behind you. Don't come back, and if you do we will hurt you, and you will suffer." It was by the cheerleaders. I laughed and threw it in the garbage, and closed my locker, and went to my first hour which was gym.
We were roller skating so I got on my rollerblades, and started skating and I put my headphones in, and started listening to music. We have an arena for skating only it's like a huge gym times 10. I looked back to see if anyone was close by so I didn't bump into anyone by mistake. When i looked back i saw the guy and he was with other people that must be the other kids because I haven't seen any of them before.
"Stop staring." I looked around me to see who was talking but no one was talking to me. I thought that I just imagined something and continued skating. From the corner of my eye and saw this fireball looking thing hurling start towards me and I ducked. It burnt off some of my hair but, at least it wasn't that noticeable. I looked around and only the news kids were looking at me with curious eyes. Could it be possible that I might be going crazy and somehow imagined it. I couldn't help, but think that it might be real.
"Nice." great now along with me maybe imagining things i was hearing a voice inside of my head also.
"What's going on. am i going insane?." I thought aloud.
"No, your not. sorry for not introducing myself. I am Veronica daughter of Zeus and Medusa and you are the human I chose to bond to Rosalind."
"But that stuff isn't real. I must have been knocked down and fainted because this can't be happening." I tried pinching myself to see if that was true but nothing was happening.
"This is very real. I'm sorry to have jumped on you. I thought you were ready and plus I need your help."
"Its fine and what can I do for you." I didn't really know what was going on but, i wasn't going to leave her hanging. I wasnt that kind of person.
"My father and mother are here in a mortal I feel them. I just don't know what mortals they are in."
"I think I might know what mortal your father is in. As for your mother I have an idea that she might be with the small group that is around your father."
"Do you know where he is at."she said with a happy tone in her voice.
I Look back and saw him and his friends eyeing me curiously. I realized for the first time that I felt a strong connection towards the mortal that housed Zeus and I didn't realized what that connection was. I was going to find out. Hopefully soon.
"He's right behind me with those people around him and I think that your mom might be one of the girls that are by him." I felt my arms and legs moving without my knowledge and knowing that I wasn't moving them myself.
"So you can take control of my body too. That's just great." I didn't know how she was able to move my body without me consenting to it but, I knew that if I tried to get control of my body again I wouldn't be successful so I opted just to follow her lead.
"I'm excited to see my father. I haven't seen him since he found his mortal and put me in hiding because I was in danger." Veronica said.
"What kind of danger if you don't mind me asking." I couldn't even imagine what kind of danger she was in.
"Since I am the next in line for the throne, there was always a target on my back. The reason I was next in line is because I'm powerful and had the special powers the Delphite spoke of. She said that a daughter born of the great Zeus would have the power of all the gods and all of the goddesses except Aphrodite. My dad had a fling with my mother Medusa and she ended up pregnant and she had me. My dad didn't know that the procephy that Delphite spoke of was true or that it would even happen in this lifetime. When I was born and around the age of four or five I started manifesting the power of lightning. Then once I mastered that it was water then the underworld which was a lot harder than most of them think. When I started following along with battle strategies, my mom knew what the Delphite spoke of was true and that I was the heir to throne and next in line should my father get killed. My mother took me to my father and begged him for my protection knowing that since I had these powers people would try to take them away." I just stood there for a moment in awe. I didn't realize that someone could have it so hard in life, but I was so wrong.
"I'm sorry I had no idea what you must has went through."
"It's okay once I talk with my father I'll be alright." We skating towards the group. When the guy looked up and I was coming towards them, he looked kind of curious and shocked. I got right by them and when I went to start talking Veronica held me back.
"Let me speak through you. I can't do it without your permission and it will go much more smoothly if im talking, since I know more than you do on this matter."
"You have my permission Veronica. Goodluck." I retreated to the back of my mind and let her have full rein. I could still hear and watch everything from where I was which made me very happy because I got to look in those gorgeous blue eyes without him knowing about it.
"Excuse me. My name is Veronica and I need my father." Veronica was talking and she was using my voice and it was really weird. The guy stood up from where he was sitting on the mats.
"What do you think your doing. Your supposed to be in the castle with the guards. And you shouldn't be in the mortal yet. You are not ready and she isn't strong enough to keep you safe." he said with a increasing anger, but yet a concerned voice.
"Ren, you should know more I know that she can hold me and I was in danger at the castle the guards turned against me."
"How in the hell did you know my name." Ren said, but then he quickly had his answer.
"You read my mind. How dare you. Hasn't your father taught you any respect to other people's mind. God I would hit you but i don't want to hit the beauty that your in right now. Because unlike you i'm a gentleman and i know she can hear and see me. And while we are waiting for your father I would like to speak to Rosalind. There's something I need to ask her."
"Okay. Fine and my dad did teach me some manners. I just don't like you and plus you deserved it from the last time we spoke."
"Rosalind he wants to talk to you while we wait for my father. This might take awhile. I warn you to be cautious he is very persuasive." I didn't realize that she could talk in my head and i took that as a good sign since I was nervous and was afraid i might reply with an answer for her that would indeed make me feel exposed. So I shook my head to let her know that i heard her loud and clear.
"Hi i'm Rosalind, but apparently you already knew that sooo..." I drifted off not knowing what to say next. I didn't want to embarrass myself in front of him.
"Yes I did. I need to ask you something and I know we only meet but, I need you to be completely honest with me. If your not then I won't get what I need out of this."
"Yes I understand and i will be completely honest with you no matter what the question is."
"Good. Now late last night and early morning did you have a dream about me and you or just me."
"Yes, I did. But what does that have to do with anything."
"Hold on a second. What happened in that dream."
"I was looking at you and felt warmth and I felt safe and felt a connection towards you."
"That's exactly what I felt. I wonder what that means."
"Excuse me, if I may please talk to my daughter and figure out what is going on. You guys can finish this conversation later." He talked in Ren's voice, but I knew that it wasn't him and that it had to be no one other than Zeus. From the way he held Ren's self he was very confident in himself and it really attracted me to him.
"Excuse me Zeus if I may asked something before Veronica comes back out."
"Of course anything."
"I see what you see in her Ren nice choice." obviously he hadn't realize that he had spoken aloud until he saw me blushing.
"I'm sorry I thought that I said it in Ren's head. Please forgive me miss."
"It's ok. I'm just not used to getting this kind of attention. Everyone here doesn't talk to me and i don't have any friends here so I just keep to myself mostly."
"I'm sorry I didn't know. I wish there was something I could do to help but i'm afraid that I have no real powers down here. I mean I can use my powers down here but only people who believe in us will actually see us and our powers. We have very strong glamours in place to ensure that people won't see anything and that way we can keep them safer then if we didn't use glamours."
"It's not your fault. It's okay really everyone here is real snobby. They're like your average rich spoiled kids. I may be rich and sometimes spoiled but i will never be snobby because what's the point. I'm an only child because once I was born my mom got ovarian cancer and she had to get surgery. My parents wanted more children. They decided against it because when I was younger I had cancer and I got threw it but I will always be at risk of getting it again. So i stay close to my parents because you never know when you won't be able to spend time with them. Why did I tell you guys that I never told anyone that ever." I can't believe I6 told them that. I didn't want anyone to feel sorry for me because I had overcome it and was healthy for now and hopefully forever.
"It's fine and the reason that you told us is because you feel like you can tell us everything and plus complete transparency is great. I would really like to talk to my daughter quick because I have to go soon. I would really like to continue this maybe over dinner." I knew that the last part Ren said because the voice changed.
"Of course I would love to. Thanks Ren."
"How did you know that was me talking and not Zeus." Ren asked with awe.
"You guys have a different ways to use your voice and it's really easy to pick up on."
"Ok, well see you later I guess." I didn't want to leave Ren but I knew that Veronica needed to talk to her dad and so i backed down.
"Father" Somehow the voice coming out of my mouth wasn't mine but a beautiful voice and I figured that it must be her real voice and she was somehow able to use it through me which I thought was pretty cool.
"Veronica what happened what made you make the connection so soon. You know that you were supposed to wait until she was seventeen. I know that her birthday is only a couple of weeks away, but you needed to stay away and when it was time ease into it and not completely do it in one swoop. You both could have been seriously hurt or worse even killed and I can't have that. You including her have way to make to do before that needs or ever needs to happen. Do you understand me Veronica."
"I do understand you, but this couldn't be avoided. I was in the gardens and I heard this explosions and turned around to see all the guards were dead and only a few were left. The guards who were left were using powers to make the explosions and that killed the guards. They were coming after me next and the only logical thing that i thought that I could was make the bond. I knew that the chances of her being able to host me were very small, but I knew that I would have a better chance living making the bond then actually staying with those guards."
"How could that happen I make sure that there is extensive background checks to make sure that the guards don't have that kind of power or not even power. I'm so sorry that this happened to you pumpkin and we will figure this out and i'm also sorry for yelling at you for making the bond. After hearing that I would have been furious with you if you hadn't made the bond in the first place."
"So your saying that I was in the right this time. Wow. I didn't think you had it in you to admit that you were wrong."I could sense that Veronica was being sarcastic and that made me laugh even more. Veronica and I would get along quite nicely. I think I found my new best friend. Hopefully she feels the same way.
"Yes I guess this one time is an exception. I understand completely. We have to keep an eye on her so all of you guys need to bring her into your circle." he turns to this one girl.
"Elizabeth, I need to talk to Medusa about this. She needs to know that her daughter is safe." So that's the mortal that Veronica's mother was in. Interesting.
"Of course."
"Veronica you scared me half to death. I went to go see you and you were gone and I had no clue where you were. I hope that you're alright. I don't know what I would do if anything bad happened to you. Your the light in my darkness. I love you so much sweetie."
"Mom, I'm fine, no need to get sentimental on me now. I love you too." I felt kinda like I was eavesdropping on this and started feeling bad. I wanted to say I was sorry, but something held me back from doing so.
"I'm not. I just get so worried about you sometimes. Being this powerful is dangerous and I don't want anything to happen to you."
"I get that mom, but sometimes you worry a little too much. It gets to me sometimes. I should be able to look out for myself, but I understand what your getting at."
"Good because me and you will be having a little talk later. You might not like what I have to say, but you will listen to me. Understood." Geez this is getting so intense. I wish I could block out everything so I didn't want to be here anymore. I just wanted to disappear in a black hole rather than being here with them. I hate family issues.
"Ok fine whatever. I need to bring Rosalind back before she wants to explore. I can't have her roaming around in there she might get lost. Cause I almost got lost." I doubted she was telling the truth. I didn't have much to offer up there. I mean I didn't think that I did anyways, but you never know.
"Ok good. See you soon and don't be late. I will be watching the time." I didn't want to go back I liked it here. It was nice and quiet and it was comforting. Before I knew it I was back in control and didn't know what else to say. I was literally speechless.
"That was really weird. I think I should be going now." I started to turn around when I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"I don't think that would be a good idea Rosalind." Ren's voice had a worried tone to it and it made me stop dead in my tracks.
"Why not?" I was glad but also mad at him for not letting me go. I needed some time to figure out how i'm supposed to deal with all this. It's not like I can just take all of it in at once and be fine and dandy with it. This is going to take some serious time.
"Because we are not supposed to let you out of our sight. Zeus's orders not mine." I was going to start to argue with him, but I decided against it knowing that I would never win in this fight.
"Fine, but don't expect me to be able to understand all of this at once. I need a little time to understand and fully comprehend this whole situation."
"That's completely fine. I wouldn't expect you to. I certainly needed a long time to comprehend all of this when Zeus chose me. Then again I did always have a feeling that I was different from most people." I felt kind of sorry for the both of us. I mean we were thrown into this and are lives changed forever. I mean I liked knowing about this, but I also knew that with this knowledge comes danger. I wasn't to sure I was up for the danger.
"Ren could I ask you a question."
"Sure Rose. Can I call you Rose."
"Sure that's what my parents call me for short so it's cool."
"Cool. So what did you want to ask me Rose." I started having this longing feeling. I don't know why but I started feeling the connection again.
"When you found out about this, what was your first reaction to it."
" I was....." right when he was going to tell me the bell rang signaling that it was time to take off my skates and head to next hour class. I was pissed I wanted to know what he was going to say. Hopefully i'll have another class with him and we can finish this conversation.
"That's the bell. I can show you to your next class. What do you have?"
"I have Ceramics with Mr. Lewis."
"That's my next class too. Follow me and maybe while were walking we can continue. We have like half an hour before the bell rings for students to get to second hour. Plus school is really chill. So even if we are late nothing will happen.''
"So does that mean we can skip the rest of the day. I want to show you something." I couldn't believe he was suggesting that we skip school. I mean i really wanted to and plus I was so ahead of my classes that missing a one day of school couldn't hurt.
"Yeah we can. Who's all going to be coming with us." I was really hoping he was going to say that it was just going to be the two of us.
"I was planning on it just being the 2 of us. If you want I can ask Elizabeth or Sam to come along." It was like he was reading my mind and I know for a fact that they could read mind at least I knew that Veronica could. I wasn't too sure about Ren though.
"No it's fine I was just curious." I hope he couldn't sense how nervous I was.
"Sounds like someone has a crush." Veronica voice was literally going up an octave like someone trying to lie about what they were doing.
"Another question. How can you talk to people in your head without saying anything out loud."
"You basically just think about what you want to say and it works. Kind of like that person is reading your mind almost."
"Thanks."
"Veronica I don't have a crush. I don't know what you're talking about,"
"Of course you do. I can see it in your face and your mind is only thinking about what Ren looks like without a shirt on." I couldn't deny it I did want to see him without a shirt and see if he had abs or if his chest was as tanned as his muscular arms.
"Fine I am. If you tell him about this I will hurt you and I don't care if Zeus hurts me."
"Honey you could never hurt me I'm immortal to a point. I mean you could kill me, but I would come right back and be perfectly fine. So you might not want to do that because what's the point."
"Dang it. I guess i'll have to find others ways to torture you."
"Try me mortal." I was going to respond, but if it wasn't for Ren I wouldve ran into a tree.
"Thanks. I was having an argument with Veronica and I was totally winning."
"Sure i'll go with that one Rose. I'll just talk with her later about it. Cause from the concentration on your face I would say that she was winning." What have I gotten myself into. No that's not right. What has Veronica gotten me into.
"Let's not focus on that. I'm guessing there is a more important thing to worry about then who won in an argument."
"Your right. We need to find out who would wants Veronica dead."
"Since we're talking about gods and goddesses. Do you think that maybe their father wants his power back and is attacking Zeus heir."
"Cronus hasn't been active for awhile so we didn't feel like we had to investigate him. Maybe investigating him would be a good idea. I'll have to tell Zeus about that. For just finding out who you are, you sure know how to think."
"I just read his mind and he is seriously crushing on you Rose."
"I thought you weren't supposed to read his mind Veronica. Your going to get us both in trouble."
"What they don't know can't hurt them now can it."
"No I guess not."
"Here's my car." He opened the door for me and I jumped in.
"Nice car."
"Thanks. It's my dads."
And with that we drove away in silence.
