Long, long time ago deep in the forest there was a village where the dwarfs lived. A peaceful village mostly the young and old dwarfs are happy, busy and love working. Male dwarfs spent their time at the cave mining gold while the female dwarfs are busy working at the farm planting vegetables. They just work and work not minding the children to go to school. But, there is a young dwarf who is different from them all. His name is Welf.
After he finished his work, Welf hurried up walking down to a place where he can find peace while reading his favorite books. Welf wear a smile as he came nearer to an old big tree. He climb up there then as he sit on a big branch, he take a deep breath smells the air so fresh and look around the forest with happiness on his heart then, he open his book and start reading.
"Welf, Welf, Weeellf." A tiny voice shouting calling his name near his left ear. He turn his head and said. "Oh, Twek! Why are you shouting as if i cannot hear you? You know that i am here but you keep on calling my name. You little naughty Maya bird." Twek answered, "Did you see me flying near you, ha? NO! your eyes and your mind are there in the book you are reading." Twek the Maya bird is Welf best friend. Twek is laughing and flying in cirlce then he stop in front of Welf. In a surprise Twek flap his wings at Welf face. Laughing out loud he hurry up to fly in a distance so that Welf will not catch him. They are both laughing and spent an hour talking and reading Welf book up in the old big tree and they went home.
One morning while Welf and his father walking on the way to the cave where they work, Father dwarf ask Welf where he spent his time after he finished his work. Welf did not tell his father that after his work he went to the forest and stays in the old big tree to read his books. He just said that he was playing with his best friend Twek. Father dwarf look at him suspeciously but Welf don't mind it.
Confident, Welf went to his secret place everyday without knowing someone followed him and observing what he and Twek are doing.
As the dwarfs are busy working, the news spread out on the other villages that none of them knows how to read they just work and work. The black and lazy dwarfs heard the news about it and they just laugh at them. But, Dolf the leader of the black dwarfs is thinking something. With a hoarse voice, Dolf called Blink ( as he was always blinking his eyes when he heard Dolf loud or angry voice.) He is the right hand of Dolf. "Come near me, Blink and listen. Do you hear about the white dwarfs in the other village that they just work and they do not know how to read?" Blink so proud he answered. " Oh, Yes, yes, yes, i already know that since last year." Blinking his eyes he ask. "Why, Dolf?." With a loud angry voice Dolf shouts at him. " WHAT, you know it a long time ago but you did not bother to tell me, where is your sincerity, Blink?" Dolf grab the shoulders of Blink and shake him with anger. Blink trembling and nervous he says, "Oh, sorry i do not know where my mind is during that time and until now, Dolf because you always shakes me when you are angry at me." In dismay, Dolf turn his back at Blink. He rub his chin with his fat hand wearing a clever smile on his face.
All are busy while working at the cave when Dwenk, Welf cousin walking towards him. He whispered at Welf. "What are you doing in the forest with Twek?" Welf is surprise to what his cousin told him. Welf answered. "Nothing, we just play, talk and relax for a while then we go home." Dwenk said, "I do not believe you Welf. You know that i followed you so many times and watched what you are doing up in the old big tree with Twek. I am happy to see you reading your books and i envy you for you have time on it. Why you kept it by yourself? Why not teach us how to read. Most of us are willing to learn and let our mind enrich with knowledge. I assure you we will keep it a secret to our parents." Welf on the other hand, hesitate to say anything he look at his cousin with so many question on his mind. Welf cannot decide at the moment whether to say yes or no. Dwenk tap his right shoulder and said. "Think about what i say and we will do the planning."
