As I sit in the Observatory looking down into the Earth I feel a familiar, comforting presence behind me.
“Hello Ares” I say without turning around.
“Hello Athena.” He says “If I may be so bold to say, you look ravishing in this light”
I look around quickly as he sits down next to me and say “You can’t just be saying things like that! What if Father had heard you? Or worse Aphrodite!”
He leans down and gives me a quick peck on the cheek and says “Why should we fear them my love, Hmm? Are we not just as much gods as they?”
“Ares, you know why. We have discussed this multiple times.” I sigh and he nods, a sad look sweeping across his face.
“I know, I know. You want to go get some Ambrosia back at my place?”
“Sure, but you better go first. I’ll follow behind in a few minuets.”
As he walks away, I can’t help but see how he is a walking oxymoron. He is the God of War, but he is extremely graceful. I guess that’s a perk of being a god. A few minuets later I follow him, just as promised, but run into a very attractive and very snappy dilemma. Aphrodite. She may be the God of Beauty, but man does this female dog have some bite.
I swallow back the bile rising up in the back of my throat and give a short and polite “Greetings Aphrodite.”
She gives me a sneer and says”You can pull the goody to shoes act with daddy, but for Zeus sake cut the crap with me.”
I give a slightly cynical laugh and say “Oh Aphrodite. You say I put on an act. Everyone thinks your little Miss Ray of Sunshine, boy do you have them fooled. I, however, actually am good, something you would know nothing about!”
“I’m tired of playing games with you Athena. I only have one thing to say to you. Stay. Away. From. My. Man.” Her finger gabbing at me with every word.
“You mean Hephaestus?” I say innocently
“You know who I’m talking about, you little brat. Stay away from Ares. Everyone knows the only reason I’m married to that ogre and not Ares is because Hera felt bad for throwing him off Olympus and making him homely.”
I sigh and say “Whatever Aphrodite. Don’t get your toga in a twist. Ares and I are just friends. Nothing more.”
“You better be. I’m watching you Athena.” She says and the turns on her heel to go torment someone else. I swear if she wasn’t one of Zeus’s favorites…
Who knows. Maybe I should heed her warning and stay away from Ares. Heavens knows it is probably going to me into more trouble than I bargained for, but hey anything in the name of love right? I finally get to Ares palace and as I walk in I smell something burning.
I rush inside and call out “ARES!?!?” then suddenly the door slams behind me and I hear a deep voice coming from the darkness within.
“Hello little goddess”
