Caroline heard the hawk cry out. She rushed in to see her trying to stand but falling in pain. Rushing over, she grabbed a blanket on her way to the injured hawk's side. Caroline laid the hawk back down on her back, and pulled the blankets that were already in the makeshift nest back on top of her, tucking them in around her to keep her from trying to escape. She then took the other blanket and held it doubtfully for a moment, considering what her mom had told her to do if she needed to, the dropped the blanket on the table next to the basket. She ran and grabbed a few pillows from the couch in the other room, stacking them up behind the hawk's head. She then apologized to the hawk for what she was about to do, then draped the blanket over the pillows and far end of the blanket, dropping it so it created a sealed tent around the hawk, with enough gaps to let oxygen in, but keep it dark inside. Caroline sighed sadly at having to do this, but she had to keep the hawk quiet, and still so she would heal faster.
Flame churred at the human as she sprinted past again. Caroline paused next to the surface her basket was on to tuck her back into the nest and press the blankets around her to keep her in. Cocking her head the human's way, she watched as the girl ran toward the soft looking thing in the other room, coming back with soft looking rock-like things, similar to the larger one in the other room. Flame continued to watch as the human stacked the things up behind her head, then ran out of the room again, coming back with a blanket of some sort. She laid the blanket across the bottom of the nest by Flame's talons, then draped it over the rock-things behind her head, murmuring a soothing sound at the hawk. Flame immediately felt calmer in the dark, seemingly safer cavern beneath the blanket. She tucked her head under her wing and sank into a deep, healing sleep.
Caroline, however, seeing the hawk sleeping, went over to her mother's pile of birding books, scanning the titles, hoping for something on bird care, or, even better, taking care of birds of prey.
When she awoke, all Flame could see was darkness. She chirped in confusion and panic, not knowing where she was. Thrashing around, she knocked the blanket off a corner of the basket, brightening up the little cave-like structure a bit. Flinching at the suddenly bright light, she waited for her eyes to adjust before hopping through the gap, into the sunlight.
When she emerged from the pile of rock-things (pillows), she immediately started scanning her surroundings. Behind her, the cave. Next to her, the wood things (chairs). In front of her, the fence, separating the other room. And on her other side, the invisible barrier hemming her in, keeping her from being free. Outside the barrier (window), it was bright and sunny, with a light breeze. Perfect for flying. If she could just heal her wing and escape this place...+=+=+=+=le time skippy=+=+=+=+
