The Journey

The journey was sickening. The waves crashed relentlessly against the boat. I felt even worse when the boat hit the sea again-making my body jolt forward. The weather was unforgiving. The raging skies were lit by the sparks of lightning and our ears ringed from the claps of thunder above us.

All I hear are the cries of men who realise that this isn't what they expected. In fact, it was worse than anyone could've ever imagined.

Suddenly someone comes and sits themselves next to me. "Layton, James Layton"

"Sam Pirring" I say, shocked that someone has come to speak to me.

"So you've come alone? No family with you?" He asks

"No. I have no brothers, no children and my father died when I was young" I say, trying to keep back tears.

"Sorry man. That must be real tough. Well anyway, I'll be here for you now. Everybody needs someone watching their back and lucky for you, you've got me!"

In a way I was glad that I was no longer alone but at the same time, I felt more alone than ever.

I found it hard to keep conversation going as I wasn't good with new people and also I didn't feel to great because the sea was very choppy.

The ocean spray was making my eyes sting and my mouth dry. Any water I had left I knew I would have to save until I got to the drop off point. Then it hit me. It may not be people that kill me. I could die a slow and painful death. It was then I decided to write a letter to my mother and family.
