CHAPTER 01

HER SHRIEK PENETRATED the sound of crashing waves in the air. The surface of water slammed into her body like concrete and reverberated through her muscles, and she wanted to plunge below until everything was drowned in silence once again.

The powerful waves, she had always loved them. And when they are roused, they could toss ships like toys, smashing them on the rocks.

She breathed in the salty breath of the oceans which only emanated poignancy. "I can't live like this," she cried.

The moment her foot would slip from the cliff's edge, she knew she was going to die. She knew her madness wasn't ceasing, it was only increasing. She returned her gaze to Virat. Feeling the salty taste of the air on her tongue and the scent of the sea in her nostrils, she closed her eyes to evade the pain that tagged along.

Biding him a goodbye was difficult. After all, they've been practically attached to the hips since their kindergarten.

"No, Maya." Virat caught her by wrist, making her turn on her heels, so that she's no longer facing the cliff. "This is not you. These are the pills talking." He explained it to her. "Throw them when we reach home."

Maya cried helpless, and she could remember Ophelia from Shakespeare's Hamlet in that moment. Her madness was synonymous to hers. Maybe that's why she decided drowning was the best option to kill herself. She had always idolized her.

Ophelia had drowned herself. Just like she was going to do.

The only thing she hated about Opehlia was the fact that she grieved the death of her dad. She couldn't relate to it. She couldn't relate to the fact that Polonius was a man worth remembering and mourning. Because her dad, Yash, had always been nothing but an asshole to her. Their constant had always been in the form of Yash inflicting pain on her, and countless days and nights spent in the darkness. Her dad was detestable, while Polonius wasn't.

Yet she wanted her story to scramble with the final words:

Maya drowned.

Ironically, so did Ophelia.

For a moment, she forgot about Virat's presence; but when she looked at him, she couldn't help but smile. "You saved me from him," she told him, wrapping her arms around his chest. "You were right. I should've killed him long back."

Virat grinned at her; for a moment Maya could sense it was a diabolical smile but Virat could never be evil. Especially when he is saying, "Because I love you. I always have, and I always will."

Doubt thou the stars are fire,

Maya smiled, and laid a soft kiss on his lips. Her heart always pounded just like the water which always pounded against the rocks in the form of white foam. She knew this love was sinful, but sins were red, and red was beautiful to her. So all that mattered to her was this togetherness, this never-ending association, which made them happy. And she was never letting him go because he was his only form of happiness, and the feelings were mutual.

"I love you too, Virat." She smiled at him feebly.

"Let's go home, and get those pills out of your room. They're certainly messing up with your head." Virat told her, running his hands through his hair. The weather was windy, but he couldn't help but admire the way Maya's hair fluttered because of the breeze blowing.

"Yeah, let's go. I've never liked those pills anyway." Maya said, cringing, before Virat looped an arm around hers letting out a small chuckle.

The walk back to her home was like a fairy tale, and Maya wished it was like a memory on a cassette which she could repeat again, and again, and again. Every moment with him was, truthfully. Virat had suddenly appeared in his life like an angel. He was her companion when her dad locked her in the dark storage hall, because she had always felt claustrophobic inside it. Even in her school, he was always there to help her fight the loneliness she felt. No one had ever wanted to befriend Maya for some reason.

But Virat, he was always there.

Smilingly, they return back home. When Maya strutted towards the kitchen along with Virat to fetch some water, Raima, Maya's mother, begrudgingly shot her a look of disdain.

Maya knew the reason behind it. It was impossible to not know.

"She still hates me for killing dad, doesn't she?" Maya asked, once they were back in the dining hall. Virat gave her a tight lipped nod. "And she hates you too; she never looks at you, let alone talk to you." she sniffled, burying her head in his chest. He smelled of coconut and salt.

Doubt truth to be a liar,

Virat pinched the bridge of her nose, suddenly lighting up Maya's grumpy mood when they pulled away. "It's okay. Because at the end of the day, all that matters is that she cares for you. Otherwise, she would've told the police, you know? --"

"-- Maya, who are you talking to?" Her mom snapped at her, as she set the dinner on the table. Maya bit her lip, internally groaning. How could she act with so much indifference to him? She loved him, and only him, after all. "Did you take your pills?"

The question made Maya's eyes widen. "Yeah, mom." she replied, but I'm not going to take them anymore.

Because he doesn't want me to take them anymore.

Maya and Virat together rushed upstairs. Once they entered the room, Virat tossed the pills at Maya. Reluctantly, she threw all the pills inside the bath tub. The pills were going to diminish her existence, and clearly, Maya and Virat didn't want that.

Maya's gaze was fixated on the bath tub the entire time as she saw the pills dissolving inside it. The bath tub held memories; how she had forcefully made her dad, Yash drown inside it. He was screaming in agony and pain, but no one was there to help him.

Maya never knew she had so much strength inside of her, but that night, she had felt like she was made of the lightning, valiant and powerful. She was pushing him harder and harder until he was struggling for his last breath.

Somehow, killing him did make her happy.

But the truth was she killed him only because Virat wanted him dead.

He had been her nemesis since forever, and it was always going to be like that.

but never doubt I love.
