Camila's POV

The dark clouds coming from the smoking sector were spreading more and more through the bar as people moved in and out of that back door. I coughed. Either way they smoked inside. Austin gave two last puffs to the cigarette between his fingers and extinguished it in a metal ashtray that one of the waitresses had left in exchange for a little extra tip. I hated the smell of cigarettes, but he loved to smoke, and I couldn't do anything about it, nor did I care. I knew the bastard had been cheating on me with his secretary for some time now, but what could I do? My minimum salary wasn't enough to try and afford a life on my own, I needed him. At least until I got a nice, stable job.

"Honey, give me another cigarette, from your bag." He turned to tell me, with a gallant smile. His colleagues continued to tell anecdotes and laughed way too hard for my taste.

"Why are your cigarettes in my bag?" I questioned, annoyed.

"You know there's no room to put them in my pockets, darling, your bag was the best option." I narrowed my eyes, my brow furrowed with obvious anger.

"I don't want the smell to be there, I told you I don't like it." I returned the stinking pack, stamping it harshly against the palm of his hand.

"Okay, Camila. This isn't just any day, my friends are here and I don't want you causing a scene in front of them." I couldn't believe it. Scenes? I'd never caused scenes of any kind and I had to endure his stupid jealousy all the time. If the postman had waved his hand at me, if the cashier at the convenience store had smiled at me, if the neighbor had come to ask for sugar while he wasn't at home, everything was a reason to get jealous. I huffed, removing my phone from the bag and pulling at the edge of my dress that'd ridden up.

It would be a long, boring night. Austin had been invited to a bar as a celebration for his promotion and of course, I had to come in the set. As an accessory, so that he could exhibit himself in front of his buddies. That was me, a 'prize' girlfriend, the decoration in the middle of that useless celebration. I wasn't stupid, I knew that several people desired me, but Austin was the sure thing. He and I started dating in the last year of high school and it'd been that way ever since. With his captain-of-the-basketball-team charm and me being the captain of the cheerleaders, the appearances fit perfectly. The whole school loved us, we were the common envy of the students, the couple of the year.

I was never in love with him, but over time, I got used to the routinary relationship, and even tried to convince myself that I did love him. But the truth is that the only thing there was, was a show for the acclaiming public. The only thing we loved about each other was how good we looked together, like a couple of models in a photoshoot for a famous clothing brand.
