"Alpha," Smoke gasped in a raspy bark. He was bowed in a submissive manner, ears flattened and tail tucked between his legs. The huge wolf in front of him spoke in a low growl, amber eyes glowing fiercely.
"Your report? I hope that things are running smoothly?" he asked in a threatening manner.
The black wolf winced. "Yeah, about that, they got away. Although we do have a prisoner-" He was cut off by the snarl of the very furious leader.
"You mean to tell me that they all got away?" he yelled, hackles bristling. "You worthless wolves, you can't even beat a bunch of pups and Learners?"
"Gale, wait. I have a plan," Smoke woofed, tail still stiff between his legs. "We could torture the Learner into giving information about the forest and the packs, and we could take over the forest!"
"Might work," Gale growled flatly, the light brown he-wolf pacing. "But I'm worried. You have failed us not once, but twice now. What would happen if you failed, say, a third time?"
"My great Alpha, I will make sure that will never happen again," the dark wolf barked solemnly. He bowed deeply.
"But the thing is, I don't fully believe you. And so, my warrior, I am sorry, for I must do this." Gale swiped a paw across Smoke's throat and he collapsed in a heap, dead within seconds.
"And to think Cedar left us too, just to go and help the stupid wolves who call themselves 'The Wolves of the Moon.' I will take over the forest," the power-hungry Alpha muttered.
"Granite!" he called, and a moment later a sleek tawny-and-gray she-wolf appeared.
"Yes, oh wonderful Alpha?" she asked with a bow of submission.
"Oh get up," Gale growled. "You are the new Beta. Come on, we have to see to our new... source of information." He barked a few orders to some other wolves, and took off sprinting to another cave. Who knew what they were going to do to that Learner, and what information they would uncover.
Okay, so that was a little short. I mean, the prologue and epilogue were super short and I only had 13 chapters. Oh well. Stay tuned for the next book: The Captured Soul. **SPOILER: THE SOUL IS ACTUALLY SPIRIT, AND IT'S GONNA BE IN BLAZE'S POV**
