————-
Cooper let out a soft cry before he slid down onto the ground to lay down. Where had his people gone? They said that they were all going camping, and once they got here they were all happy and playing! Even Bear played with him, and he never did that! But they all smelled sad, and Bear told Cooper he was sorry but wouldn't answer when he asked what he was sorry about. Then when they were all playing fetch they just vanished! He was so lonely.

———-
Cooper lifted his head slowly, sniffling. How long had he been laying here? Who knows. He heaved himself onto his paws and chose a random direction to wander in. He sniffed a few times to see if he could find any familiar scents. He smelled trees, grass, some rodents, birds, and... cotton candy? The smell seemed to be getting closer as well. He lowered himself to the ground as two wooly dogs stepped out of the bushes. The smaller male began to approach and sniff him over. Cooper swiveled his neck and sniffed at the wool. Well, he found the source of cotton candy scent. The grey one, a female, approached more cautiously and spoke with a heavy unfamiliar accent.

"Why are you out here alone child?" Her voice was so soothing, something Cooper was certain could only come from a mother.

"My humans left me here." His answer seemed to confuse the wool-dog.

"Your humans? You lived with them? They are very dangerous dear."

"No, these ones were nice to me!" Cooper protested as the male finished the inspection and lowered himself into a play bow. Before Cooper could accept the request to play, the female stepped between them, guiding Cooper in a new direction.

"Come child, lets get you something to eat in a more secure place."

-----

"mmf!"

"Don't talk with your mouth full dear" The female laughed.

"Sorry ma'am! But these berries are real good!" Cooper said after he swallowed. The male snorted softly, wriggling to press against Coopers warmth more.

"I know love." Said the female as Cooper began to bury his nose in the wool that made up the nest they were laying in.

-----

"Alpha please! He's just a pup, no older than Mud!" the female called to the wool-dog carrying Cooper away.

"Irrelevant, he is prey." Growled the 'Alpha' wool-dog as his grip on Coopers neck tightened. Cooper whimpered. He female lowered her head in grief.

"Alpha please, you cannot afford to do this." The male next to him, his beta, whispered. The Alpha turned an glared as if to say 'and why not?'. "Nearly all of the females and many of the young males have grown attached to him. If you were to do this it would surely cause a revolt."

"I am the Alpha, and my rules will be obeyed! And I say this prey must be killed" the alpha spat, dropping Cooper to the ground. He wasted no time in scrambling to his feet and running to where the females, and the male Cooper had spent the day with, were gathered. The alpha growled at the beta until he lowered himself closer to the ground in submission. But when the alpha turned back to where Cooper had been, he stood at full height and glared at the alpha. He was a lot bigger than the alpha, and seemed to be smarter. When the alpha began to slink towards the females and elder males guarding Cooper, many of the younger males also stepped forward to protect the young vipera. When the alpha growled at them to move, none of them gave any signs they would be moving. Then suddenly the beta was on top of the alpha, wrestling him to the ground and clamping his jaws down on the alphas ear. The females shielded the view of the pups as the two fought. When the fight ended, the beta won and growled at the alpha, telling him that if he left peacefully he would be spared. The alpha tried to attack the beta again, but his jaws reached the alphas neck first and he went limp. The beta dropped the body to the ground unkindly, and two young males began to drag it away with seemingly no respect.

The previously-beta turned to the pack. "I am the alpha now. And I say that the pup will stay, and be raised as one of our own." There was no protest from the pack, in fact, there was cheering and happy barks. When they quieted down he spoke again. "Orca, I'm assuming you would be willing to care for the pup." He chuckled as he watched Orca groom him with such relief for his safety. She froze, embarrassed, and shuffled her paws.

"Yes alpha, thank you alpha" she said quickly. The new alpha walked over to where Cooper was being sheltered by Mud and Orca, and lowered his head slightly. Cooper reached up and licked his mouth lightly to acknowledge the new authority. The alpha chuckled lightly.

"What is your name pup?" he asked softly.

"My name is Cooper, alpha sir" Cooper responded softly. The alpha nudged Cooper onto his back and turned to the pack.

"Cooper! The newest member of our pack!"

----------

Orca sighed into the back of Coopers neck, feeling the comforting presence of Mud and Cooper on her side, and falling into a peaceful sleep in the nest at the center of the nursery.
