I've never been any good at skipping stones. I stand at the lakes edge, sinking stone after stone. One after the other. Plop. It doesn't work for me.
"You're not doing it right", I hear from behind me.
I turn around to see a ginger haired boy, about my age or a little bit older.
"Ok, well how do I do it then?" I ask. I'm tempted to have a go at him about his bright orange hair, but I decide against it.
"You've got to have a flatter stone and bend down lower", he tells me, finding a stone and skimming it six times.
I find a stone that looked like his and I try the way he does it, but it still just sinks to the bottom. No matter how many times I try.
"I give up!" I say, sitting down in a very unladylike way.
"I'm Ed, but the way", the boy says, sitting down next to me.
"Well Ed, I'm Kia, thank you for trying to help me, but I think I'm destined to not be able skip stones for my entire life" I reply.
He laughs quietly.
"That wasn't supposed to be funny", I say.
He doesn't say anything. I wonder who he is and where he's from. I've never seen him before, and I've lived here my entire life.
We talk for a fair while, and get to know each other a bit.
It starts to get dark so I figure I better get home.
"It's starting to get dark", I say. "Mum would want me home"
"Oh yeah", he says. "I'm actually supposed to be going to dinner at our neighbours house. I just moved here with my mum and we've been invited over for tea. I think mum would probably kill me of I was late because she really wants to make a good impression.." He trails off as he stands up.
"Hang on, any chance you live up in Cranberry lane?"I ask as he helps me up.
"Yeah we do actually", he tells me. "Why?"
"Well I think we're neighbours then! I actually forgot until now but mum invited our new neighbours around. So yeah, we better get going", I say and we set off towards Cranberry lane.
It's about a five minute walk to my house from the lake. On the way back I learn that he's seventeen (only a little but older than me, it's my birthday in a few months), his parents divorced three years ago and he's an only child. I tell him about my family, I have a little brother Max who is eight, and my dad died not long after he was born. That's about it really. The walk is over too quickly. Even though we don't know each other very well, I can tell I'm really starting to like Ed. He seems really nice.
We say goodbye and go to our different houses. The second I'm in the door mum orders me to the kitchen to keep an eye on the vegetables.
"What are you even cooking mum?" I ask. She doesn't really like cooking much, but she will when she has to.
"Roast lamb, you can make the gravy, I mess it up every time", mum tells me. I don't really know how she messes up the gravy every time. It's either too lumpy or too runny. But I don't mind making it, because then I know we will have gravy. In my opinion roast lamb is not roast lamb without gravy. It just isn't right. I find the gravy mix in the cupboard and whip up a quick batch. I pour it into the gravy boat as the doorbell rings.
"I'll get it", I yell. I open the door and I'm a little disappointed to find that waiting outside is just Max, who locked himself out, not Ed and his mum. Soon enough though, there is another ring of the doorbell, and in comes our new neighbours.
"Hello, I'm Cathy, and this is Ed", Ed's mum tells me.
"I'm Kia", I introduce myself "Welcome to town!" I say.
Ed smiles at me as I take them to the table where mum has dinner set out. I feel fluttery in the stomach. He has a very nice smile.
