My mother pulls me close as the sky and the bus rumble. I dont need to look up to know her expression -filled with guilt and disappointment, her light blue eyes are probably heavier now. She reaches a thin hand into my denim jacket's pocket, pulling out the pack of cigarettes. "Have a good day at school," she mumbles, stepping back and releasing me.
I turn, letting a sharp sigh escape between my lips. I'll have to buy some mire after school, a waste of money.
I loosely swing my body into a cool navy bus seat next to my friend.
Anthony offers me a perplexed look, "Why you lookin' like that?" He leans his broad back against the window, dark eyes like bottomless pools.
I shrug, facing away from him for an instant. I turn around again soon, the mkod passing and becoming myself again. "When's the science project due?"
He meets my gaze and holds it. "Today."
"Shit!" I shout comically, throwing my hands up in mock frustration.

"I wanted to speak with you, Alix," Mrs. Pox's high-pitched voice stops me in the hall.
I turn around, tipping my head up as as I do. "Yeah?"
She fixes her green gaze on me, "On your last daily assignment you recieved a 20 but-"
I cut her off, widening my bright eyes. "I don't have enough time to do corrections, lately. I promise that I'll get up to date."
The blonde haired woman doesnt move a hair. "And you got an 86 on your test," she finishes, her expression stone-like. "Why?"
"I got lucky," I shrug, wiping my dark brown bangs out of my eyes. My voice comes out more agitated than intended.
"You got a 95 on a math test," the lady continues to ramble. "But on a project? 34. Stuff you've proven to know."
   I glower at her. "I don't know."
  "You always say that."
  I shrug.
  "You're smart."
I start backing away, shrugging in false innocence. "I gotta go. My family's waiting."

I exitbthe building, smiking at my friends, telling them ill catch up. I have to do something important. I walk a block away to a gas station and buy a pack of cigarretes, beacause thats what a dumb 16 year old is mean to do.
