I was walking home from school when my phone began to go off. My sister was calling. She wouldn't call unless it was an emergency. My eyes grew wide as I walked into the house and answered the call.
"Ello?" I answered, afraid of what Melony was going to say. She was crying in the background.
"Get to the hospital quick! It's Adrianna!" she cried. I dropped my phone and ran upstairs to grab my mom.
"Mom! Adrianna is in the hospital! We need to go now!" I said, tears streaming down my face. Adrianna was my two year old baby girl.
"Oh my god! Grab the keys and get in the car! I'll be there in a minute!" My mom yelled. I ran downstairs and grabbed the keys.
I jumped into the passenger side and put the keys in the hole. My mom jumped in and started the car quickly. We sped to the hospital and ran to Adrianna's room. When I saw her, my heart broke.
Adrianna was just barely alive. She was broken and she flinched every time she took a breath. I ran to her bedside, tears threatening to spill. She mumbled a small "Mama" and closed her eyes.
"Adrianna! Stay with me!" I screamed. Her heart monitor replied with low, slow beeps. A doctor ran in and made everyone leave.
"I'm sorry ma'am but you have to get out," he said.
"I'm her mom! I need to be in here!" I screamed. Tears were streaming down my face, getting my shirt even more wet.
"You can't stay in here!" he replied with a bit of force.
"Please!" I pleaded. "I need to see her last breath. Nine months going to waste."
"I'm sorry ma'am. You need to go with everyone else," he said. My mom and sister pulled me out of the room. I sat down on the floor against the wall, breaking down in loud sobs. My mom tried to calm me down by telling me she would be okay.
"NO SHE WON'T!" I screamed. With that, my mom stopped trying. I continued to cry.
A few minutes later, I heard the door crack. A few steps, then someone clearing their throat.
"Excuse me Ms. Falter, um, we're extremely sorry, but your daughter didn't make it," the doctor said.
With every word he said, I felt myself becoming less conscious. When he finished his sentence, my world just stopped and I blacked out.
*******
I woke up with a wrap around my head. I hoped everything that happened was a dream. I felt around for my blanket, finding only my shirt.
"Adrianna?" I crooked, trying to sit up. When I heard no laughing or anything, no footsteps or playing with pots, I screamed. Everything is true.
When the door opened, my whole world fell apart. There was my baby girl, lifeless. It felt like bricks falling on me again, and again, and again. I just sat there.
"Come on Felicia. You have to get ready for the funeral," my mom said softly. I just jerked away and rolled in a ball.
"Leave me be," I whispered.
"Felicia María Falter! Don't you dare talk back to me!" my mom yelled. I just looked at the ceiling.
"Mom, I just lost my baby girl. You didn't have to deal with this. You didn't have to see your daughter die!" I screamed. She looked at me with shock. I just closed my eyes and began to cry.
