Nightfall has come over the city of New York. Lights from the squad cars lit most of the streets up around the station. News vans and helicoptors swarmed the building, trying to suck every bit off information they could out of the officers in time for the presses. Dany and Alice were at the medics, patching up her bashed head and his now blue shoulder. Dany told one of his stupid jokes and they both shared a laugh. It was a good sign.
"You did good, kid."
Chief already looks tired from all the paperwork that he's going to fill out.
"Yeah, all things considering."
"This is one of the biggest cases we had in a while. You might even be looking at a raise."
"You know what? I think I'd like to finally take that holiday that you've been bugging me about, if it's still available?"
It's been a while since I've seen Chief smile that warmly.
"Yeah, it's still available. You got plans?"
"A few."
"I'll see you tomorrow, Tom."
Chief gave me a tap on the shoulder and went off to fight the reporters tumbling the scene to get their big story. An officer guided Matthew to the squad car right next to me.
"I'll see you around, Tommy." He said with a grin.
"No, you won't. With all the things you've done, they're going to lock you away for a long time."
He gave another devilish grin.
"Now what makes you think I did this alone?", said Matthew as the officer put him into the squad car to let him follow his father's fate.
I have no idea what he meant by that, but I'm too fucking tired too care. I drifted past all the fuzz into my car and started to pull away, watching the lights fade in my rear view mirror, thinking about all that still needs to be done at home.
The cold air of the night filled my lungs that felt like for once, things are taking a break, but for how long?
