Yes, dying is instantaneous. One moment you are alive, the next you aren't. The process to get there through hanging however, feels far from instantaneous.
Your entire body weight is being supported by a rope tied to your neck, this alone is quite painful. Then you are being suffocated, it feels like your head is being filled with air. The pressure becomes worse the longer you remain conscious. You feel the area behind your eyes pushing, they begin to water, it feels like they are going to burst. You start getting dizzy, then you are disoriented. There is also a constant pressure in your chest, as your lungs struggle to get air that isn't coming.
Once you lose consciousness from oxygen deprivation, your are in the clear. Getting to that point is a struggle.
the idea with hanging is that you are disconnecting the head from the body causing instant death. there is an actual equation that needs to be done to get the knot and rope correct for weight.
if it is wrong, you will fully decapitate the head from the body or the person will end up slowly suffocating.
