Early September morning, my daughter Olivia is starting college and I was starting a new job as a paramedic at firehouse 51. I'm so nervous. I had moved from the UK to Chicago because my husband was a firefighter but he die on the job. I needed a new start.
I arrived at the firehouse to be greeted by a gentlemen he said "Hi, my name is Herrmann you must be our new PIC, I'll show you to chief office." I knocked on chief door and he said "Enter!" I walked in and said "Hi Chief, I'm Gabriela Dawson, I'm the new PIC!" Chief said "Hi Gabriela have you been shown around yet?"
I said "No Chief please call me Gabby!" Chief showed me the common room, sleeping quarter, the locker room and the showers. Then chief ordered a meeting with the whole house. Chief started to say "We have new PIC on Ambo 61 give your warm welcome to Gabby, make her feel like home."
A lady walk over to me and said "Hi, I'm Shay and I am your partner on Ambo 61, do you want me to show you everyone?" I replied "Yes please" I went into the common room with Shay and then she said "This is Captain Casey, Herrmann, Mouch, Otis, Cruz and then on the apparatus floor there is Lieutenant Severide, Tony and Capp."
I went into the locker room to put my bag in my locker and then decide to text Olivia 'Hi Olivia, how your first day at collage going. If you want you can come the the firehouse and meet everyone who I work with. Love you xx'
Olivia's reply 'Hi mum I'm enjoying my first day of college and I'm so happy that you enjoy your first day as being a paramedic and by the way I have made a new friend can I also bring her with me please. Love you xx.'
I reply 'Yes of course, if I'm not here wait in the kitchen and I love you see you later. xx' I went into the common room to get a drink of coffee and then sat next to Herrmann.
