Haruki Sagae leaned against the wall of her family’s small, run-down house as her nine younger siblings ran about around her. She closed her eyes and smiled, wishing that those days could go on forever. She knew they wouldn’t though, and she would have to go out and kill once again. A life where she could sit peacefully and watch her beloved family all day would never come unless Haruki carried out her job, and assassinated her next target. One after another they were assigned to Haruki, and one after another they died.
Haruki sighed and stood up, setting her pink nail polish back on its shelf and pulling a pocky stick out of the box she held in her hand.
She munched the chocolate end of it and stepped out the door of her house. “Bye guys, I’ll be back soon!”
Her siblings all stopped playing and turned to face her as she walked away. “Bye bye Nee-chan~!” They all called back to her in unison.
“Come back safe!” Haruki’s mom yelled after them.
Haruki waved back at her family one last time and then turned her thoughts to her newest target. A middle-aged man, well-off financially. She wasn’t sure why he’d be a target for assassination, but she figured everyone has their enemies.
She straightened her red bow, beige jacket, and red skirt as she stepped down the path into the city’s night.
Turn right, then go straight.
This was probably the closest target Haruki had ever had, his home being only a 20-or-so minute walk from her place. It gave her shivers, thinking that soon it would be her area infested with police cars and sirens.
All she had to do was locate and eliminate the target. That was all. She didn’t have time to worry about the end result right now.
Go left at the fork in the road, then turn right again.
Haruki stopped in front of an average-looking house in the middle of the street. All the houses around her were dark, with lights off. It was after midnight, after all.
She peered at the number on the door. 26. Bingo!
After one more quick glance around to make sure no one was there, Haruki deftly leapt over the small gate that separated the street from house number twenty-six.
Her feet hit the ground—and everything went black. Only for a second, though.
When Haruki regained vision, her surroundings had morphed into a complete nightmare. Giant, purple, monstrous spiders with butterfly wings were crawling around everywhere. The air was almost shimmering, and stretching.
A screech filled the place Haruki could only describe as insanity made real. She looked up into the now-purple sky and fell backwards in terror when a grotesque monster fell to the ground in front of her.
It was an almost cartoon-like human-shaped thing with purple, scaly, and lumpy skin, no arms, and a face that consisted solely of two bright green eyes, glaring at Haruki. It wore a party dress, also green, covered in purple, scaly hands that fidgeted and twitched their disgusting fingers.
It took all Haruki had not to scream as the monster approached her ever so slowly, and as the spiders moved in from all sides, making a chorus of little clicking and slurping sounds.
Am I going to die? She thought silently to herself.
