Emma Swan wasn't your every day 15 years old. Sure she just finished the 10th grade and was about to start her junior year this fall. Sure she liked school, she liked most of her teachers last year and she made pretty good grades too.
She lives in the small town of Storybrooke Maine with her mother, Mary Margaret, her father, David and her younger brother, Neal. But, right now she is in NYC. Sitting in a waiting room of a specialist that she has been coming to for the past 10 years. She knows what the doctor will say. She knows that her vision has gotten worse since the last visit 3 months ago.
Emma hears her name called and she walks with her parents into the exam room.Regina Mills sat in the back seat of her father's Land Rover. She looks out the window at nothingness. Well, nothing but trees. They had been in the car for the last 7 hours and she was ready to get out and stretch her legs. She was 16 years old and was going to be starting her junior year at a new school in a new town in a new state.
She looked over to her sister Zelena who was watching Netflix on her iPad. She was a little jealous of her. Zelena had just graduated top of her class, senior class president and valedictorian and was now going to be spending the remainder of the summer in their new town and then drive down to Yale where she was going to be studying to become a lawyer like their mom, Cora. Their dad, Henry is a doctor. That's why they are moving to Storybrooke, Maine. He was offered a job as the chief of surgery and with an increase of his current salary, so he took the job.
They finally pull into the drive way of a large white house. Regina notices that the movers were already there moving things into the house, which she is a little grateful for. She got out of the car and finally she could properly stretch her legs and back. She grabs her back pack out of the car and walks though the front door to see a beautiful foyer with marbled floors high ceilings with a lovey chandelier. In front of her is what she assumes is the dinning room and to the right is a living room. As she walks up the stairs Zelena pushes past her.
"Watch where you're going Zee."
"Sorry, but I'm going to be having the best bedroom and there is nothing you can do about it." Zelena states as she walks up the rest of the way up the stairs. Regina just rolls her eyes and sets off in search of her new room."Well Emma I don't think I have to be the one to tell you that you really don't have much sight left in either eye." Dr. Sheppard says as he writes some thing down on a notepad.
"I know. I can't see anything when it's daylight only the light and inside it's about the same."
"We already knew that you would still have some light perception left from previous testing but I do think that now you have lost a large percentage of what remaining vision you did have left." Dr. Sheppard tells the family.
"Well that I kind of already knew that much." Emma scoffs.
"Emma," Mary reprimands. "Do not speak to Dr. Sheppard that way. He is only trying to help."
Emma takes a calming breath. "Sorry."
"No Emma, " Dr. Sheppard says placing down his notepad. "It's alright. I understand that what you are going through is definitely difficult. Especially when you are as young as you are with your whole life ahead of you, but I know how strong willed you are and I know that you can overcome and thrive even without your vision."
Emma gives him a half smile. "Thank you, Dr. Sheppard."The rest of Emma's appointment went as most of her other doctor visits. They tell her the same thing over and over. She knew that she had technically been blind since she was 8, but blindness is a spectrum and now that she was pretty much solely reliant on her cane to navigate this dark world, she really considered herself blind. It was what she knew was inevitable, but her reality was now starting to set in.
"Well, why don't we go get some pizza before heading back to the airport. We can even go to your favorite place Emma." David said to Emma trying to make her feel slightly better.
"Thanks dad. Let's go. " Emma says taking off in the direction that she knows the small pizza parlor is.They ate their pizza in near silence. Mainly because Emma wasn't in much of a talking mood. And as they sit waiting to board their flight Emma receives a text from her brother.
Neal: We have new neighbors.
Emma: Okay...
Neal: well from what I can tell by looking out the window is, they have 2 girls... Not sure how old and they have a lot of stuff. I think I'm going to go over and help because it looks like the dad got into a fight with the movers and now the mover just unloaded everything onto the lawn.Emma doesn't reply to her brother's text because telling him to be careful never works. But, she does inform her parents of her brother's discovery.
Neal walks over to the house next door and spots the man that was yelling at the workers, silently hoping that he isn't just a big jerk and yelled at the men for no reason.
"Hi," Neal says walking up to the man. "I'm Neal Swan, I live next door." He informs pointing at the house behind him.
The older man smiles at him. "Hello Neal, I'm Henry Mills. It's nice to meet you." The man says with a giant smile extending his hand to Neal.
Neal shakes his hand. "I noticed that you might need some help, if you would like it. I'm fairly strong."
"That would be amazing thank you Neal." Henry tells him and they both get to work lugging boxes and bed frames into the house.
After about an hour of helping move the stuff in off of the lawn, he was now sitting in the large kitchen of the new neighbors. "So, what brings you all the way to Storybrooke?" Neal asks.
"Well," Henry says placing a glass of water on the counter for Neal. "I was offered a job at the hospital and so I took it."
Neal nodded at the information. "So, you're a doctor?"
"Yeah. I'm going to be the new chief of surgery." He says taking a sip of water.
"That's cool. I think I want to be a cop like my dad." Neal informs him.
"You're dad is a police officer?"
"Yeah he's the towns deputy. Graham is the sheriff. And my mom is a teacher at the elementary school"
"And where are you're parents? I would like to meet them."
"They should be home soon with my sister, Emma. They flew out to New York this morning because she had a doctors appointment." Neal tells him drinking some more of his water.
"Why would she have to go all the way to New York for a doctors appointment?" Henry questions.
Neal smiles. "Well, my sister has to go every few months to see a specialist there. She's blind and they do some test and stuff like that."
"Ah, I see." Henry says taking the. Now empty glasses and places them in the sink. "My wife, Cora, is in New York. She is a lawyer and is finishing up a case before coming up here."Regina has heard her father talking to someone downstairs and was a little curious as to who he could be talking to. She talks another look around her new bedroom and to her surprise Zelena and taken the smaller of the rooms says that since she was only going to be there for a few months out of the year and Regina had to live there all the time she would give her the larger room. And Regina thought the best part was that she had her own en-suite bathroom, so she wasn't going to complain about that.
As Regina made her way down the stairs she saw that Zelena May have had the same idea.
"Who is dad talking to?" Zelena asked her.
Regina shrugged her shoulders and they both went down to investigate. They walked into the kitchen and saw their dad talking to some kid.
"Regina, Zelena, this is Neal one of our new neighbors." He said gesturing to the boy.
"Hi." Neal said with a slight wave.
Zelena marched forward and shook his hand. "Hello, I'm Zelena. That is Regina my little sister."
"I can talk for myself thank you." Regina says shaking Neal's hand. "It's nice to meet you Neal."
"It's nice to meet you too." He says giving her a smile.Just as Neal started to speak, his phone started basting it's generic iPhone ringtone. "Sorry, it's my dad." He says looking at the caller ID walking to the other room. "Hello?.. I'm at the new neighbors house. .. Okay sure. .. Bye."
As he walk back in he announces "So my parents are back and said that they were going to come over here and help with moving some more stuff."
