"Gemma! Get your ass back in the house!"
He was staggering towards me, his breath rotten with the stench of alcohol. His words were incoherent, and I did what mom always told me when Todd got like this, I walked out. And didn't look back, didn't acknowledge his existence. Todd was my mothers second husband, my step father. He tormented me, hit my mother, and frightened me. He was also a dead beat drunk, on top of all that. He was still trying to follow me, and I laughed. He looked like a deer learning how to walk, all gangly and wobbly.
I always asked my mother the same question over and over when he got like this, why? Why mom! Why don't we leave! I'm sick and tired and terrified that he might kill you one day in one of his drunken temper tantrums.... But I always leave out the rest and just ask her why? She always says that she is too frightened to leave, but I don't understand why, because I am scared too, and I can keep her company, we can make it out together, I always say, but she always smiles and pats my hair and says, My sweet Gemma, my protector.
With shaking hands, I lightly touch my head. My fingers touch something warm and sticky. Blood. I look around for a cut, but there never is one, ever. It confuses me, because I always wonder where the blood comes from. He threw a plate at my head, that bastard did. And why, might you ask? Because I was leaving to go to my friends party. A freaking party! And he almost decapitates me for it!
"Where in the hell do you think your going?" He asked me.
"A party. For my friends birthday." I looked in to his eyes, which was a bad idea, because I saw the evil in them, and I shuddered.
"Oh yeah? A party, huh? And what are you going to do there, Gemma? Slut around just like your mother I bet!"
This made me furious! How dare he call me and my mother sluts! Which we are not!
" I am not a slut, and neither is my mother. I am going to that party. Get. Out. Of. The. Way."
His face contorted, and twisted. He was not an ugly man, but because of all his actions, I found him absolutely hideous.
I turned on my heels, and walked towards the door, and suddenly ducked. I don't know why I did. It came as easily as breathing, I didn't have to think, I just acted. I heard something whizz by my head, and then crash into a million shards, all over my scalp. I winced, but I held my head high, and walked out the door.
"Gemma!Get your ass back in the house!"
And that is how I ended up walking away, only to be left with a bloody head, with out a cut. I wondered again where the blood came from. I kept walking faster this time, I could see my friend Cora's house from here. I could feel the music pulsating through my veins like blood. The thump-thump kept in tune with my heart. I was almost there when someone grabbed me by the shoulders. Instinctively thinking it was Todd, I grabbed his hand, and flung him over my shoulder.
"Shit!"
That voice did not sound like Todd's, because it was not slurred. I didn't recognize that voice at all, in fact, I never heard it in my life. I walked over to where I flung the guy. He was around 18, with light stubble on his cheeks. He had blackish brown hair, and his eyes were pinched. He must have sensed me hovering over him, because he flinched. He opened his eyes, and I stepped back. I could have sworn I saw them glow in the dark.
