Saving Crime:
"I know enough about crime and lies to know where people go wrong. Hell, this was where I went wrong. In almost any case, if you wait for long enough and have a lot of patience, you will find the truth. Listen closely and watch what they do, because if you missed it. . . Well, you'd have lost it.
"It's all about recognition. If you did something amazing, played the part perfectly or told the most complicated lie without stumbling, if you did any of that and did not get caught all you would want was to be appreciated. We all felt the need to gloat, so other people could bear witness to what you were capable of. That's where people went wrong. They wanted to be known for whatever they did, if only by one person. Sometimes, it would eat them up inside. Having people think that they weren't as good as they really are.
"The people who were really great at what they do were the ones who no one knew about. They were the ones who stayed silent and watched, not interfered. Let the investigation take its toll, and fade into nothing, where all the other forgotten crimes sleep. They were the strong ones. They were the ones that didn't fall into temptation. They were the ones that wouldn't get caught. They were the ones that would succeed.
"Though, even after years of hard work, it only took one mistake. One little, pointless, insignifigant detail could cost you the lot. And it cuts so deep, baby doll. So, try to be better than your old man huh? I know that you'll do great things."
I'd left after that, we didn't say goodbye. Maybe because we were hoping it wouldn't be, or maybe beacause that was something we had never done. I had listened to his words, and knew I would never forget them.
I never heard my fathers voice again, even after all these years.
