I see him kiss her. I can tell she isn't into it. The anger I feel inside can't even be described. She stops before him and tells him something. He doesn't smile, and before she can say something else, he yells at her.

"Then goodbye!" Then he leaves her by her locker, utterly alone. I feel bad for her. That she has to live like this. Everyday he yells at her for whatever reason. I decide to walk over and talk to her about it. As I get closer, my heart rate begins to speed up. I approach her and all I can say is, "Hey, Layla." She looks at me and I see water in her eyes.

"What's the matter?" I ask.

"Nothing, nothing. What's the matter with you?" She wiped away her tears and smiled. It took a moment for me to realize that she was teasing me. I look down and laugh.

"Oh." I see her laugh, too.

"So, what's up?" She asks me.

"Oh uhh...I wanted to know if you wanted to come over and study with me." I couldn't tell her the real reason why I started talking to her.

"Absolutely. I asked Luke if he wanted to study with me, but he said he had 'plans' with his friends." She used quotations with her hands.

"What a jerk. You should really think about dumping him." I tell her. She smiles and nods.

Chapter 1: What Makes You Beautiful

I've been best friends with a girl named Layla Rust ever since my freshman year in high school. One of my band mates from One Direction, Harry Styles, introduced me to her and awhile after, we became very good friends. I've had a huge crush on her since my sophomore year, but I don't know if she feels the same way about me. At the beginning of the year, which is now my junior year, she started dating a guy named Luke Duff. He's a huge jerk and he cheats on her everyday, but she doesn't know. I think I should tell her tonight when she comes over to study. It's Friday and school is over for the weekend to come. I text Layla and remind her that she could come over now. She texts back and says, "Okay." And as I wait, I make sure my room isn't a complete mess. Then, I go down the stairs and let my mum and dad know that she's going to study with me. They say "Okay" and I go back up the stairs to my room again. She doesn't live very far away from my house, so five minutes later, the door bell rings. I head to the door and open it. She's dressed nicely. She's wearing a blue v-neck shirt, black skinny jeans, and black and white converse. Her hair drapes beautifully down her shoulders. She greets me with her usual.

"Hey, tommo." She flashes me her well known smile. I smile and look down at the ground, then back at her.

"Hey, beautiful." I knew she wasn't gonna take that as a 'boyfriend' thing because I give her compliments everyday. Unlike Luke. I step aside for her to walk in and lead her to my room. As soon as we enter, she sets her back pack on my bed and as do I. We get out our text books and study. A moment later, I decide to start a conversation.

"So how's Luke?" I gently ask.

"He's fine. But, I don't feel like I belong with him." She looks up from her book. I look back.

"Why is that?"

"He doesn't love me like he should. And he never worries for me or feels bad for hitting or yelling at me."

"He hits you?"

She nods slowly. I sigh in disappointment.

"Louis, I keep making the same mistakes over and over by taking him back. But if I break up with him, there'll be no one who will want me."

"I would." I say quickly. She sits up straight and smiles.

"You would?" She says surprised of my statement.
