Chapter 18: Nathan
Halloween seemed to pass quickly and slow at the same time. It was quick in the sense that it was over and I had to contemplate for a minute if the day was indeed gone already. It was slow in the way that Brenda wasn’t there. I would be standing on a door step lost in thought over how different Halloween could’ve been if she were here, when all of my friends had already gone to rob the neighbors next door of all their candy. All I needed was to look at my bag, or should I say sack, of candy to know that I had definitely already been trick-or-treating. We all had grabbed a medium sized garbage bag and raced out the door. My garbage bag was about seventy five percent full, and I had already eaten more than fifteen pieces of candy.
I was on my bed with my hands over my stomach, eyes closed, thinking about the day’s events when the phone rang.
“Michael, go answer the phone!” my Mom shouted from her room.
I heard a grunt from downstairs and the creak of one of the floor tiles.
I don’t know when I fell asleep, but through all that had happened, my brain simply dozed off. I woke up to the sound of my blaring alarm clock.
Shoot, now I only had about five minutes to get dressed and eat breakfast, if I still wanted to catch the bus. I tried running to my drawer, which wasn’t very bright, as I ended up tripping, I mean, uh, hugging the floor, over my bag of candy and landing about a centimeter from it. Speedily, I stood up and opened the drawer. I pulled out a pair of jeans and a grey t-shirt. I shoved everything on, and sprinted downstairs.
When I made my way into the kitchen, Michael was already shoveling a bowl of cereal down his throat. I grabbed a pop tart out of the cabinet as well as an apple. I tore into the breakfast-type pastry.
It was my favorite, cinnamon and brown sugar. About a minute later, there were a few crumbs on the table and a halfway full stomach, which was the only evidence that the pop tart had been there at all. With my apple in hand, I slid my feet into my shoes. I grabbed my back pack and walked to the bus stop. Since it was now November, it was starting to get chillier out. Stupidly, I had forgotten my sweatshirt at home.
Brenda was already there when I arrived. It seemed she had also forgotten a jacket. I guess I’m not the only one at least. I started eating my apple. I minute later, the bus pulled up. Brenda stepped onto the bus, and I quickly followed. We chose a seat towards the front of the bus.
“Hey Nathan, I’m sorry I couldn’t make it to the Halloween party yesterday,” Brenda said, and rolled her eyes. “Ahma wouldn’t let me out of her sight because there’s some dangerous family running around or whatever.”
“I know,” I replied. “I came to your tree yesterday and overheard you two talking.”
Brenda gave me a weird look. “Alright, then. That’s not creepy at all.”
We settled into a peaceful silence for the last minute to school. The bus pulled to a stop and opened the doors.
“Bye Nathan,” Brenda said before waving and stepping off the bus.
I waved back before also stepping off of the bus and walking in a separate direction from her.
My day seems to pass at the pace of a snail with a broken tail. When the bell finally rings, signifying the end of the day, I practically leap out of my seat and sprint towards the door.
When I make it to my locker, I grab my homework and shove it in my bag.
The rest of the week followed the same way. Get dressed, eat breakfast, talk to Brenda on the bus, arrive at school and go home.
Needless to say, it was a fairly uneventful week.
