Lauren and Lila: The Cookie and The New Word

Lila: Shy, small, nerdy girl, who likes cookies and hanging upside down
Lauren: very outgoing, flamboyant, with a very large vocabulary for a 12 year old

Year: 2014
Grade: 6th

      It was the last day of the school year, so the kids had been allowed to spend all day outside. There was a large   Hunger Games going on around playground Gazebo; a small girl with a long, black pony tail was poised in a tree, waiting for some unsuspecting player.
      There was a game of soccer in full swing, and a game of tag going around the track. On the opposite side of the playground, there was a set of monkey bars, and on one of the high single bars, a girl name Lila was hanging upside down by knees, and eating a cookie.
      Next to Lila, there was another girl, named Lauren, who was walking across the large set of monkey bars, humming  to herself as the walked. Once she was across, she jumped down, and walked over to Lila.
      "How are you doing that?"
      "Doing what?",said Lila, taking another small bite out of her cookie, and pushing her glasses back up her face.
      "That! With the cookie!", Lauren yelled, looking fascinated with the little girl and her cookie, who was now wide eyed and startled by the girls high-pitched voice, and holding onto her cookie a little tighter.
       "Can you not eat cookies? Do you know how?"
       "Of course I know how to eat a cookie, but not upside down!" cried Lauren, who was unconsciously getting closer to Lila, which was causing Lila to swing a little farther back in fear.
      "It works the same way. You just take a bite,"Lila took a small bite from what was left of her cookie,"you chew it, and then you swallow it. Try it, it works the same as eating a cookie right-side up."
      Lila reached down into her bag at the base of the bar, pulled out a bag of cookies, shuffled down the bar, and offed a cookie to Lauren. Lauren climbed onto the bar, slowly lowered herself down, and took the cookie. The eyed it with suspicion, and then abruptly shoved the cookie into her mouth. She began to chew, and then, eyes squinting with effort, swallowed the whole cookie. This series of events seemed odd to Lila, but she decided that it didn't matter, because now she had someone to share her cookies with, so she was happy.
      After a couple minutes of chatting about random things, all the while hanging upside down on the monkey bars, Lauren, who had developed a headache from being upside down for so long, flipped off the bar, and stood up.
      "How do you not have a headache?"asked Lauren,"You've hanging upside down since before I got here."
      "Practice, I guess. I've just learned not to get a headache from it anymore."
      This response made Lauren want to show off how much she had learned in her life, but she wanted to think of something that her new friend Lila wouldn't possibly know. Then she remembered the new word her brother Thomas had taught her yesterday. The only rule about the new word was that she couldn't say it to any adults, and since Lila was her age, she figured it was ok to tell her, and that she wouldn't know the word, because most kids her age didn't.
      "Do you know the f-word Lila?"Lauren said, excited to share her knowledge.
      "No...what's the f-word? Is it frick? My cousin says that a lot, but I don't know what it means."
      "No, no no no, the f-word is Fuck!", Lauren exclaimed,"it means when people have sex!"
      Lila, so startled by this new word, which she had heard her parents say, and had been told never to say,  and also horrified by whatever this sex thing was, promptly fell off the bar she had been swinging on, and on impact with the wood chips bellow, passed out.
      Lauren, while a little startled, figured her new friend was just tried from hanging upside down so long, and needed a nap after learning such an important new word, so she sat down next to she new friend, and continued to much through the bag of cookies.

Lila and Lauren are still friends today.
