Background Character

Chaînes (Shenay) sits in her desk in the back of the class, taking notes. She looks around at the other students periodically, watching them chat in whispers and notes. Chaînes never whispers or passes notes, she simply takes notes and watches the others. Of course, she does have friends although she is quite reserved. She has only two true friends;Chloe and Zoe. Chaînes looks at the clock, 2:40, five minutes to the end of school. "I can't believe I'm going into eighth grade next year." She thought as she began to put her things into her beat-up, leather backpack. Chaînes had never been special, never wrapped up in drama like the popular girls, never getting straight As like the nerdy girls, never getting into trouble like the popular boys, or doing sports or even clubs. Chaînes never cared, she knew she wasn't special. The bell rang loudly, although it was still drowned out by the screaming seventh and eighth graders. "IT'S THE WEEKEND, BOI!" They would shout it every Friday and every time a teacher would chase them down and give them detentions for Monday. Chaînes meets with Chloe in the hallway as they make their way outside to the bus. "Did you hear that today Anna  was caught in the boy's bathroom with Derek? They were in there when a teacher walked in and ..." her voice seemed to drift off. Chaînes knew that Chloe was always in the loop about drama. Chaînes acted like she didn't care but deep down she secretly wished that she could just be noticed. They made their way to the bus where they sat with Zoe. "Hey guys." She said quietly, barely noticing them. Her nose was buried in her sketch book, which she always refused to show anyone. Many rumors flow around the school about what she might be drawing and why she is so strict about never showing anyone. Chaînes never believed in the rumors but she was curious about what Zoe was drawing, although Chaînes never made any efforts to find out. The bus ride home was just like any other, with eighth graders yelling, seventh graders telling them to be quiet or joining in, and sixth graders who seemed to exist in their own bubble. Chaînes would quietly listen to the noise from the front of the bus. When the bus arrived at her stop she grabbed her bag, flung it over her shoulder and exited the bus, saying goodbye to Chloe and Zoe on her way out. She walked two houses down and turned to walk up her driveway when she realized her mother and brother having a huge fight. This was not uncommon so Chaînes just walked past them to the front door to walk into the house. She was greeted by her cat, Saturn. For as long as she could remember, Saturn was always there. Chaînes couldn't even remember a time where Saturn was a kitten! Her mom says that Saturn just showed up one day with a collar that said "Saturn" and nothing else. She says that Saturn just kind of asserted herself into the family and it almost seemed as if she didn't age. Chaînes' mom had taken her to the vet after about five years of having her to see how old she was and the vet had said she was at most 3 years old! Saturn was a beautiful and graceful cat with a silky black coat that had a spot of white on her chest in the shape of a heart. Saturn's eyes were a beautiful shade of purple that gave off a feeling of elegance and grace. She always landed on her little paws and walked with a gentle power. Chaînes made her way up the stairs to her room where she did her homework for a few hours before reading stories of where wolves and cat people wishing she had a power like the people in the stories. Her mom came into the room, "Time for bed. Go to sleep." She said still arguing with Derek. Chaînes puts on her pajamas and lays down in bed. Saturn comes in and lays with her as usual. Another wasteful day spent. A background character and nothing more. For now...

(Chaînes is pronounced Shenay! I already know people will pronounce it wrong! This is her name because it is French for chains!)
