The death of my older sister created a wound in me that would never heal. The feeling like I was missing a part of me wouldn't ever go away.

I tried to convince myself that I idolized the newfound silence, but it was slowly killing me.

And my parent's didn't understand. They were too consumed by their own grief, to even begin to recognize mine.

My dad had started drinking and my mom had started coming home later and later.

Sure, that was no way to cope with Lacey's death, but I wasn't any better.....

I had started seeing things, things that I shouldn't have been able to see.

And the more I tried to deny their presence, the more they stood out.

So I just sat there on the foot of my bed, dreaming of the better days when Lacey was alive, I was happy, my parents loved their lives and each other. But those days were far gone.

I was ripped from my thoughts as a warm hand gripped my shoulder. I gasped as I was pulled up into the air by this man, this creature.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw another figure step out from the darkness. "Put the child down," he said calmly. I exhaled as my feet reconnected with the ground.

The man who had lifted me into the air stepped back. The other one continued to walk towards me until we were face to face.

"You're even more beautiful in person," he said, pulling my hair away from my face. I tried to control my breathing as best I could, but I was truly scared, and he saw that.

I flinched as he put his hand into the air. He began to speak quickly, in a language I would have ever known existed.

"Except our final sacrifice" was the only English and the only part that I understood. It was the only one that made my heart beat faster than it already was.

Were they talking about me? What was their final sacrifice? I continued to tell myself that it wasn't real, and my imagination was seriously fucked up, but the more this creature spoke, the more real it seemed to become.

Suddenly, a fiery white light appeared in the palm of his hand. His eyes met mine. "I will live in shame no longer." I was sure I was a goner, and that my life was over. But as the fiery light grew bigger, my eyes adjusted to the brightness of the room. The white flame hadn't been directed at me, but at the man who had entered my room first; the one who died right in front of my eyes.

After that, the walls looked like they were spinning. My head hurt so much, that I knew I was on the verge of passing out. Then, he grabbed my arm and told me to follow. We ran downstairs, through the kitchen, and out the front door.

"They will be looking for us. We need to leave, now. Do you know how to get to Feywood?" he asked me. I just stared at him. I was scared; I didn't know what was going on, or why anyone would be looking for me. What just happened was unreal, but as I denied the authenticity of this moment, another part of my mind wondered into the past.

"Lacey! I'm bored. Can we go outside?" I asked her. Lacey smiled and put her books into her book bag. "Sure. It's not like homework is any fun anyway." We ran outside. I grabbed a hula-hoop and began to twirl it around my hips. "Wow," Lacey said. "You're good at that." I was happy that she approved. "What are you good at Lacey?" I asked her. She frowned slightly. "Nothing really. And what I consider to be good at, others find un-useful." I looked at her. Her black hair flowed gently in the wind, and I knew something was different about her. I gazed at the orange and pink sky. "If you could be anywhere right now, we're would you be?" I asked. She didn't hesitate with her answer. "Through the trees, to the south, past the open fields and the beautiful lake." Her eyes got darker. "Away from the danger, and the fire, and him." She shuddered but then smiled. "To Feywood."

The sound of lightening cracking in the sky brought me back to reality. The guy was still staring at me, hoping for answer. "I know how to get to Feywood," I said. I thought I saw him smile, which made me feel a little more hopeful and a lot less afraid.

"Good. I'm Daren, by the way." I nodded. "I'm B-." He cut me off.

"Yes, you're Brennen Delancey. I've heard all about you."

I didn't see the danger ahead. All I knew was that Lacey had been telling the truth about everything. And that someone, or something, was looking for Daren and I. But something wasn't right with my mind. It's as if there were parts of it that I didn't control, and that scared me the most.
