Tisiphone
Where were you yesterday when I needed you the most? Now we are being hunted; branded a rogue. My power flares like a beacon in the dark for the guardians to follow. They will find us.
You are supposed to help me - control me. I didn't mean to do it, but you didn't stop me!
My own brethren think I'm crazy and perhaps I am, after all you were once just a mortal; your opinion should mean nothing to me - you are nothing but a host - but your soul is a counterpoint to my own. It soothes my endless rage.
They are dead because of you!
Come back!
I...need you...
The Day Before - The Immortal
I hate the city. All the people scurrying around like ants, the overpopulation and the smell - and its just plain dangerous for me to be around so many mortals. Immortal, archaic, dangerous - at least that's how the government perceives us. We were human once; perhaps even normal; until the old gods souls were infused within our bodies.
And lucky me, I got the soul of the vengeance goddess, Tisiphone.
It began to happen about twenty years ago. The gods decided that they wanted a more...active role in the lives of there mortal wards and so descended to Earth, each choosing a young man or woman between the ages of 16 and 25 to become their hosts. These humans became immortals with immense powers; causing major problems for governments around the world.
Most of the time Tisiphone is content to watch silently from within me, just another shining bright soul alongside my own, but if she gets pissed off I become her instrument of vengeance. Then people tend to die - innocent or not.
I stand here in the middle of this plaza, in this crowded city waiting for my partner, another immortal with the soul of the justice god, Forseti. We hate each other just as much as our gods hate one another. Tisiphone is more...dramatic with her powers when dealing vengeance, while Forseti is more subtle and so they fight and argue often.
Forseti has arranged this crowded meeting place, because he knows the consequences for me and Tisiphone if she decides to get...dramatic. I am on my last warning with the Council of Gods now. One more over dramatic burst of vengeance and we will be branded rogue and hunted down and destroyed.
Forseti is late and I can feel Tisiphone becoming agitated and it would only take an exertion of her will to take over my body and wreak havoc to the unsuspecting mortals around us.
Suddenly Forseti materialises from the press of people. He stops before me arms crossed across his broad chest. He is wearing an expensive black suit like me, but with shiny black shoes rather that high stiletto heels like me. His masculine face is set in a frown.
'About time,' I say crossing my own arms.
'Tisiphone,' he says with a smirk, 'and her thrall.'
Tisiphone flares brighter, stronger within me. Outrage is a clear emotion from both of us.
'I would rather be Tisiphone's thrall than Forseti's coward of a slave,' I throw back.
People around us are rushing by, throwing wary glances our way. They know who we are and they definitely know me by name. Every mortal fears the appearance of Tisiphone.
I see the eyes of the immortal before me turn to black voids as Forseti takes control of the body. His face turns to an expression like thunder and his hand strikes my face faster than lightning.
I am unable to suppress Tisiphone any longer as she takes control of my body. I watch from within my own body as my fist strikes Forseti.
'Your insolence and exploitation of your power has gone on long enough, Tisiphone. We should have destroyed you long ago. The council was foolish to let you descend with the rest of us.' His voice was harsh cutting off every word in an angry staccato. He began to step away from me and his body began to glow and thrum as he drew his power. 'I have been sent by the Council to destroy you.'
I began to laugh manically as Tisiphone drew her own powers. Forseti's expression changed to one of disbelief as he realised that his powers were no match for Tisiphones'.
The mortals closest to us began to scream as they realised what was happening.
Forseti threw all his power at me in one great force and Tisiphone brushed it aside with a wave of our hand; as if it was not a burning ball of energy, but just an annoying fly.
'No longer will I be chained by the Council. Vengeance is my will and all shall fear me,' I heard Tisiphone say with my voice.
I began to fight against the prison that was my own body and mind. I could not allow Tisiphone to release her powers in this crowded plaza. People were, running, screaming all around us, falling over each other in their desperation to get away from certain deaths at the powers of the two gods.
But Tisiphones' hold on my body was firm and unbreakable and I was powerless, as I had been too many times before. But this time the power needed to kill another god would devastate the area for miles into the city.
Tisiphone released the power. It grew to a point where it outshone the light of the sun. It spread out in a silent blast, encompassing all. I had to mentally look away from the overwhelming light. When the light had subsided, I felt Tisiphone return back to being an observing soul as she gave me back my body.
I opened my eyes to a horrifying scene. Forseti had gone, leaving only a pile of slightly smoking ash. Tearing my eyes away, I looked around the plaza.
Blackened husks of those mortals caught in the blast littered the plaza and trails of smoke floated from the many fires that spread out from the plaza.
My knees buckled at the utter horror unleashed by Tisiphone and I sank to the pavements. 'Tisiphone, what have we done?' I whispered to the many dead around us. She shrank back within herself, unable to face the horror she couldn't prevent, forcing Tisiphone to the surface.
She hid within herself so well that Tisiphone was unable to find her. She left Tisiphone alone and broken. Her counterpoint - her harmony - lost; she screamed her anguish to the dead of the plaza.
