I was walking to school, just like any other Monday. The air was crisp as the seasons were slowly changing from autumn to winter. The sidewalk was still wet from the sprinklers that go off at some ridiculous time like 2am in the morning.

My name is Miranda Grace Thompson, Mat for short. I don't really have friends. I'm not a social outcast or anything, but I just think that the less distraction from school work, the better. Go ahead and say it, I'm a total and complete nerd. I have gotten straight A's since kindergarten, and being a Junior now, I plan to keep my streak going. I'm 17, and I live with my mom, just my mom.

When the 5 minute walk was over and I stepped onto Newstate High School campus. Something felt off, everyone was quiet. There were a bunch of people in a circle looking at who knows what and weren't breaking attention. I decided to avoid the cluster because usually, bad things happen to the bystanders, and whatever they're watching.

"Ok, ok, break it up guys!" Someone yelled from the cluster.

Sounds like our vice principle but I'm not sure because I've never had a conversation with him. I've never had a reason to. Newstate High School is just like any other high school, you have the preps, the football jocks, the middles, the badasses, and of course, the nerds. But the only problem is, I'm the only nerd. There's Harper who gets all B's, but a nerd only gets A's so she doesn't count.

I pushed my way through the halls to get to my first class. Once I got there I sat in my seat, front row, middle. This was my seat in all my classes. I'm such a classic nerd. I even have the glasses and the freckles too. Not that many freckles but a few. Also, I have long brownish hair with a little Blonde from the sun. I'm about 5'3" and I really hope I grow more, I hate being short.

School went by quickly today, thank god.

I was about to walk to my PE locker when I heard my name being called. "Hey! Miranda! Wait up!" It was Alan Johnson.

"Well hurry up then!" I might have forgotten to mention that I'm a very sarcastic person. By the way I was telling the truth when I said I didn't have any friends, Alan is my cousin on my moms side. He has a long history... Not bad just sad. His parents (my uncle and step aunt) were addicted to drugs and he was put in the foster system when he was 8. His foster mom is really scary and I'm pretty sure she doesn't like me but whatever, not my problem.

"Ugggggggh Mat why do you walk so fast?! You know I have crutches!" Alan seemed to be really pushy lately.

"I walk fast because this is how I walk. Now hurry up!"

"I'm. Walking. As. Fast. As. I. Can."

When he finally caught up to me, we walked back to my house to make dinner. On our way there we saw Damien Jacob French. Him and I do NOT get along. He thinks school is a waste of time and doesn't even care about his grades like umm hello, they're important! One time I even offered to tutor him, for free. He agreed and gave me an adress. When I showed up it was an empty lot with a bunch of spray apinted signs calling me a nerdy looser. I honestly didn't care, beause I was a nerdy looser. When Alan heard about it, he wanted to punch the crap out of Damien but I told him to chill. I still remember that day like it was yesterday. To think I had a crush on him in elementary school. Our dads were best friends so we saw each other quite oftern. I grew very fond of Damien and was gaining the courge to ask him to be my boyfriend when my entire world turned upside down. My dad and Damien's dad got killed in a car crash together and Damien was never the same after that. He turned dark and mean and I didn't know who he was anymore. My mom got two extra jobs to support the low income family now and she was always in her room. I got her to snap out of it evenrtually but my mom always cries when she sees me ebcause I took after my dad in the looks department. I was 9 when he died. Now i'm 17.

Alan snapped me out of my trance by mentioning pizza for dinner.

"Why are you so lazy when its your turn to make dinner?" I asked Alan.

"Probably because I actually am lazy."

Jeez I mean are all guys this lazy? I pulled out my jumbled key chain to fnd my house key to open the door.

"How many times have I told you to put your house key on a chain easier to find?" Alan hated my clutteed key chains. He also hated it when I wore nail polish, he always scrapes it off.

"Um... A lot?" I couldn't help the fact that I have a lot of key chains and keys and what not.

Alan grumbled an answer I didn't quite catch, but I didn't look too much into it. Once I finally found the right house key, we went inside and turned on the tv.

"Which movie tonight? Or are ya feeling like more of a Pandora music dance party for two?" I asked Alan because this is what we always did n he came over until my mom got home.

"Can it be for three? I was gonna ask if I could invite Kacie over..." Kacie was Alan's girlfriend. She was beautiful and they had been together since the end of eighth grade. They truly were in love and it was so freakin adorable.

"Sure, but don't think that this means you get out of making dinner," I stated because I know he will try and weasel his way out of it.

"Fine, fine, whatever you say, and Kacie will be here in 10. Oh, and i'm feeling more of a movie night, you wanna pick the Disney movie?"

"Hmm... how about a romantic comedy?"

"Okay, but no sappy lovey dovey crap."

"The Notebook it is," I remarked.

"If Kacie agrees then I guess so."

"You're such a loser Alan, you know that?"

"Yeah, so i've been told."

"Oh go and put the pizza in the oven already." At that, Alan walked away and headed to the kitchen. I searched through Netflix, and to my dismay, the Notebook was not on there. Darn. I'll try Riding In Cars With Boys, that's always a crowd pleaser. I was about to start it when Alan came rushing into the living room withe the palest face I've ever seen.

"Woah, Alan, talk to me, what's up?"

"It's... She... We need to drive to the Hospital right now," Alan practically dragged me out of the house, I didn't even bother locking up.

"Alan, c'mon dude, speak," I asked when we were in the car.

"Kacie got in a car crash. She... It was a motorcycle and it hit right on the drivers side. They say she keeps asking for me. Mat we need to hurry, I don't know how bad it is."

Holy crap he sounded so serious. Man. I wish I had someone like Alan...

It was a 12 minute drive from my house to the Hospital and I could't calm Alan down. He was tapping on the door and looking out the window while sighing every thirty seconds.

When I pulled into the parking lot, Alan basically jumped out the car. I felt so bad for the kid, I mean Kacie and I are some of the only things he has to look forward to and cout on. I really hope Kacie is okay.

When I caught up to Alan, it was complete chaos. He was yelling at nurses to tell them where Kacie was and pacing like a deranged animal. I tried to calm a him down to no avail. The doctor came out and told us they were doing an immediate surgery on her right arm because the bone had completly snapped in half. The poor girl.

Although I kept my composure I couldn't say the same for Alan. I get where he is coming from though. Doesn't help that the doctor came out and said we couldn't her until tomorrow. This was gonna be a long night...
