It was about maybe midnight when Kacie got out of surgery. All went well but I can't say the same for the guy on the motorcycle... From what the doctors are saying, he is pretty beat up.

"Alan, did you hear them? Kacie is okay, she is going to be fine, just like I told you. Alan it's okay. It's okay." I was calming him down. He was practically squeezing my hand off, but I didn't care if that made him feel better. I felt partially responsible to make sure my baby-cousin-with-only-a-two-month-difference is okay. I cared about him with my whole heart.

"Mat?" He said my name with sincerity. He was getting color back in his face now.

"Yea?"

"Thanks. I mean, I don't know where I'd be without you right now."

"Oh chill it. No biggie. I love ya kid but no sappy stuff alright? Now let's go ask if we can see Kacie now. But, let me do the talking okay?"

"Okay."

With that we walked over to the front desk and I asked the nurse if she could direct us to Kacie Kathleen's room. A24 was the room number. We walked down bright white hallways, a right, and left, and the third door down.

"Oh god," was all the came out of Alan's lips when he stepped in the room.

Kacie had a fractured knee, a broken arm, and a dislocated shoulder. She was just waking up from the anesthesia and was groggy.

"Alan?" Kacie's voice was hoarse and sounded weak.

"It's okay baby I'm here for you. I'm here. You're okay." He was holding her hand and placing a gentle kiss on her forehead. She smiled and closed her eyes.

"I'm tired..." She was slipping back into sleep and you could tell that she was on lots of pain meds.

"Go to sleep honey I'll be here when you wake up. I'm here."

She smiled one last time before fading into a deep sleep. Damn, I thought, why can't I have someone like Alan?

I left Alan at the Hospital with a phone charger and a blanket and went back home for the night. I told Alan I'd pick him up tomorrow for school so he could stay with Kacie, but he had to keep me updated, and I would call him in the morning when I was on my way.

I barely got any sleep, coffee was my savior. On my way to the hospital I was rocking out to some Taylor Swift to help wake me up but I really just wasn't feeling it.

Once at school, classes seemed to drag on and on. My thoughts kept drifting to Kacie and how she was doing. I just couldn't focus. At lunch I called Alan who told me that Kacie could come home tomorrow evening if we made sure she was kept rested. My next class was boring English with Mrs. Spain. Damien was in the class with me, ugh. I arrived 2 minutes early, as always, and sat in my seat. Disappointingly after class ended, there had been no sign of Damien. I mean not that I wanted to talk to him, but he kept the class bearable with his jokes and inappropriate gestures.

My phone started buzzing in my pocket, but my last class was about to start, so I ignored it. Math was a drag like always, but I pushed through and managed to get some of my homework done early.

"Mat! Why haven't you answered your phone?!" Alan was furious when I finally called him back.

"Jeez I didn't know it was crime, my apologies. What's up?"

"No it's not but just. I know who the motorcyclist was!" He sounded angry. "It was Damien French! That bastard I'll kill him if it's the last thing I do!"

"Woah woah woah Alan slow down. it was Damien? I doubt it was on purpose Alan okay? Take a chill pill. You are not going to hurt him." We were about 20 feet away in opposite directions of my car now so we both hung up.

"Take me to the hospital now." Alan demanded.

"Not with that tone." I said sarcastically but he glared at me. Obviously he wasn't in the mood. "Fine but we are gonna stop at Taco Bell to pick up snacks first.

"Fine."
